This wasn't unheard of at the time, the first public trans surgery in America was done as "Former GI now smoking hot!"
Fascinated by the sheer matter-of-factness of this story buried on page 8 of The Liverpool Daily Post, 29 March 1937 – “Ellen the barmaid is now Alan the barman.” Please update your address books. Now, what’ll you have?

Instead of trans exclusionary radical feminism they did trans inclusionary radical misogyny which is something lol

My gf's grandma is like this. She tells my gf how to be a good housewife and to dress modestly. She's doing better than most grandparents so we let it slide.

It's more consistent at least. TERFs: "We respect the rights of all women. If you meet these certain parameters." TIRMs: "I respect your choice of gender. Now get back in the kitchen and make me a sandwich."

I mean, it’s better? I think?

Muting it now, feed won't load because of it.

this is one of the newspaper articles my dad fuckin' cut out of the paper when it happened and kept it protected and showed it to me as a kid because he was a closeted trans girl married to a massive bigot bitch. at least thats what i realized even as a kid. 'dad's a girl, cool'

While I HATE that anyone Trans had to hide, ESPECIALLY for this long, I am also always so inspired by those who never let go of who they are. Even during the adversity of the time. I've had so many Role Models in my life who came out somewhere in LGBTQIA+ in MY adulthood, finally feeling safe THEN.

Without the anti trans propaganda trans people are a non issue for the vast majority of people and of mild interest to a few. The right to transition is of desperate interest to those involved.

True' and more than that there nothing trans ppl want for to live their new life in peace and quiet, and not to discuss their identity at all time

It's weird when people go "but what about the children?" When I told the kids I babysat that I was using he/him pronouns, they made sure to call me he and called me a guy. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it's just that easy.

Frank Zappa's song "Lemme Take You To The Beach" was originally titles "Dame Margret's Son To Be A Bride", referring to this story:

I read Jogensen's book as a kid, we had it in my school library. I found it interesting and not at all salacious. I think it set the attitude I still have today, i.e. people's gender and sex don't always line up and happily, it doesn't have to stay that way.

Captain America but instead of vitarays it's HRT

There's a large subset of fanfiction where vitarays do that as well. It also usually has Howard being bitch-slapped for (jokingly) suggesting that it means that men are better.

Steve Rogers was always a trans man, it turns out

She upstaged royalty on her return to the US. She went on to become a trans rights speaker, lecturer, actress, and singer. Amazing woman!

This just unlocked my memory of the Sherlock Holmes mystery in which orangutan glands played an important role.

There was a trans Bond girl as well.

"New York's Picture Newspaper" We wouldn't believe how hot the ex-GI was without pictures

Reading some follow-up on Christine Jorgensen and her life after the article was a very active one. Successful writer, performer, and public speaker up to her death in 1989. She seemed hella cool.

There was a lot of hate though. In 1970, when NY GOP Sen. Charles Goodell (father of Roger, appointed by Gov. Rockefeller to fill RFK's term) voted against Nixon's SCOTUS nominees and opposed the Vietnam war, Spiro Agnew called him "the Christine Jorgensen of the Republican party."
