Holy shit: When Will Lewis was newly-hired Publisher and CEO of the Washington Post, he offered NPR media reporter David Folkenflik an exclusive story about the paper's future in exchange for him killing a story about Lewis' involvement in covering up criminal activity at Rupert Murdoch's tabloids.

As always what strikes me in these cases is that the sheer *value for money* of political bribery is just incredible.

Kathy Hochul’s decision to halt congestion pricing in NYC — if it holds — is a generational setback for US climate policy. It is worse than the Mountain Valley pipeline or Willow project in Alaska, and it will have lacerating national implications. I wrote about it: heatmap.news/economy/kath...

What an absolute disaster that Republicans are still successfully playing their disgustingly cynical game of exploiting fears over antisemitism in order to advance their reactionary crusade – and mainstream institutions keep willfully playing along.   I wrote about this a while ago here: 🧵1/
We Are Falling Apartthomaszimmer.substack.com The Right is successfully exploiting fears over rising antisemitism for its reactionary crusade while the Israel-Hamas war is tearing the democratic popular front to pieces

This is incredibly antisemitic in that it entirely dilutes and contorts the meaning of pogrom such that actual histories of anti-Jewish violence are erased… all in the name of very real and ongoing genocide today.

University presidents willingly going along with the transparent fiction that Republicans care about antisemitism or universities, except as partisan weapons. Nobody who spends time around universities expects moral courage from presidents and provosts, but they're not clearing even the lowest bar.

The first two excerpts are from a February 2023 NYT column. The second two are from a NYT column published yesterday. The same columnist -- Pamela Paul -- wrote both. 14 months apart. Just a mind-blowing lack of self-awareness.

Columbia University has apparently embraced the concept of “First Amendment zones” What a pathetic failure of leadership.

All the warriors for free speech can remain silent when faced with actual abuses of free speech when it’s about Palestine. Only true warriors for free speech can actively applaud calling the police on student protestors to make them shut up.

It is worth stating plainly what happened at Columbia: the raid was l the product of collusion between a university administration and rightwing politicians to suppress politically disfavored speech. I wrote about the mass arrests at Columbia: www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Editorial in the Columbia student paper. www.columbiaspectator.com/opinion/2024...
"The administration has ignored our countless pleas to engage meaningfully with students, opting instead to continue down a path of surveillance, oppression, and authoritarian policies. Columbia should ... not censor marginalized voices under the guise of “safety” and protection."

The only thing I want to see from these newly expanded staff bios is somebody finally disclosing which writers and editors at the Times are trying to litigate their fights with their gender-questioning kids in the pages of the newspaper
A lot of times people say "It's not a story" but this is truly not a story, like I can't imagine a major newspaper signing off on a piece about something comparably minor, so far in the past, on any other topic.
