OMG, please make filing taxes in America like filing them anywhere else bc anywhere else I hardly have to do anything at all.
The freedom to do taxes myself is the worst freedom.
It's kind of wild this has been the norm for this long. A simple w-2 and maybe a couple of 1099s is all the vast majority of Americans fill out and that isn't that hard.
That’s good, but I’m curious what level of service will it bring? Can I link bank accounts and such for records? I even take a photo of my W2 and just check for correctness. I dislike having to pay for a service and think this should be the way but hopefully it won’t roll out like FAFSA
I've used FreeTaxUsa for the last 3 years and it's as good if not better than TurboTax. Totally free federal, $14.99 for state. Hoping the IRS site will be comparable but if not, I'll gladly keep using that one. They can import previous PDF returns, so real easy to switch.
I don't have a W2, it's a bit more complicated, and I did itemized 2 years ago and it's as easy as can be. My return would cost around $500 if I dropped it off at tax service.
Like I’m all aboard ditching turbo tax. The federally run site should have info preloaded, like W2’s I think? I’m just curious myself. I’ll use it, I just hope it’s easy. Turbo tax is ridiculous and they’re constantly trying to upsell people so, not having to navigate that will be a plus.
The article is fairly ambiguous. It mentions that the IRS has the info, but not what functionality will be there. Like interview one of the 100k people lol?
The IRS wants to be able to have a system like that, but it's been stifled for years by the tax-prep industry. It's amazing that they were finally able to get this far and I commend them and the Biden admin.for making this happen. Onward!
There's no reason the IRS couldn't just build a spreadsheet and let you use that (and LibreOffice is free),
at least for 99% of taxpayers, and the rest almost all need accountants anyway.
