Amazing European cup of Imperialism quarterfinals with The Netherlands, France, Spain, and England vying for top spot; the Ottomans, Hapsburgs, Germans, and Portuguese coming up just short.

The markets and media are not your friends.
The perception of an inevitable fascist victory in Europe is largely just the wishcasting of mainstream media publications saying that fascist victory is inevitable. See how the BBC spins National Rally's loss.

What's weird is how much coverage there was of the surging right and a collapsing center and but no attendant deep coverage of the left? Not even to explain why news orgs seemed to be ignoring it other than stories accusing antisemitism b/v of opposition to Israel policy. So frustrating.
BREAKING NEWS: Voters turned out in numbers not seen in decades to stop the far-right National Rally from taking power in the French National Assembly. Polls predicted a first-place finish for National Rally, which instead came in third in initial results as polling stations closed.

Man i have been saying for a minute that voters everywhere are rejecting fascist shit and it’s only the media that makes us think otherwise, but it’s nice to see that in play right now

In France, the left coalition comes in first, Macron second, the far-right third. The best way to defeat fascism is not centrism, it’s a strong left.

JUST IN: Polls closed in France. Exit polls show surprise: —Left coalition (New Popular Front) projected first. (!) —Far-right (RN) has lost its bid to take power. Anti-RN front appears to have worked very well. —No bloc close to majority. Follow this 🧵 for results and more:

According to initial estimates, the Nouveau Front Populaire left-wing alliance is projected to win between 172 and 192 seats in France's Assemblée Nationale, slightly ahead of Macron's coalition (between 150 and 170) and well ahead of the far-right Rassemblement National (between 132 and 152).

Wow, it's weird how the media narrative of a far right populist wave keeps crashing against reality in every country that actually requires them to win a majority of votes to take power
The 2nd leading pollster projects a similar result—if anything a higher range for the Left coalition. This wld be a much stronger result than expected for the Macron bloc. If confirmed, key takeaway: Left & Macronist voters transferred onto each other much more than expected. Clear anti-RN front.

Weird that @washingtonpost.com didn't consider a third possibility.

Here we go: I prepared a spreadsheet to follow today's French elections, district by district. We already know results of 91 out of 577 districts. Rest will come in starting at 2pm ET. Open it + bookmark it and follow along as calls come in! Here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets...
Question for people who are following my France coverage: what level of district coverage would you be into tomorrow? Say, no promises, I cleaned up and made public my google spreadsheet of all districts — so the count updates as calls come in. Enough interest in that?

What's next in France: —In 15 minutes, all polls will have closed. Exit poll will immediately drop; these tend to be roughly right as big picture. I'll share as soon as I know. —Results will drop in following hours. Follow this if you want weeds; or my timeline for big picture.

Belgian media is now reporting the same thing. 2 other polling institutes are independently projecting the same thing: a much weaker RN than expected, and Left bloc potentially in first place.
