Tbh, what I'm vastly more curious about is why the GQ editorial staff hates the author so much.

Phil I thank you for saving the good shit for bluesky

I think the best place to start with this article is not at all.

I think if I was Tavi Gevinson I'd block her. For my part I'll send this article to friends who have anxiety and self-image issues to show them that it could always be worse.

Have you read the essay by the Friday Night Lights guy on his love of fashion, especially Dolce & Gabbana, also in GQ I believe? At least that was about men’s fashion. Mild spoiler: he entered rehab shortly after it was published. A true great of the fremdschämen genre.

I did and I remember thinking at the time that it was undignifed for a man in his 60's to be wearing bespoke Italian avante garde fashion at a time when he should be figuring out who his favorite cordwainer was. It's like seeing an 80-year old man in a Ferarri. Tryhard shit.

I'm so embarrassed for her, oh my goodness.

I thought that picture when he was advertising his Batman movie was bad(“Sadfleck”). Is this recent? Here his appearance, his posture, even the cigarette in his hand, does not look like a man who knows happiness except as a definition found in a dictionary app.
Avatar
This was taken on his honeymoon with J-Lo and they kept being mobbed by fans and they were both being good sports about it and signing stuff and taking selfies. He would quickly hide his cigarette for pics. So, I think he'd just needed a break from being mobbed, but this picture lives on.

I wouldn't say I'm a fan of either of them, but I thought he handled this better than a lot of people would have. I felt bad for the guy.

Even though I will never know these people, they are rich and famous beyond my imagination that photo still made me feel sad for him… And if I posted this comment on the infamous social media site formally known as Twitter, I would get eviscerated !

I became aware of this person through the whole Caroline Calloway saga, and honestly this is exactly the kind of thing I expect from her

NOW THIS MAKES SENSE Thank you

I'm going to back away slowly and thank myself for having my back. Yikes.

“I remembered [an article], the only topic I could think of that wasn’t about myself.” WOOF.

I hate this whole trend toward humiliating self-discovery elite pieces. That was the definition of "cringe" with a side of creepy. And they all sound like they're trying for a self- deprecating Gatsby-esque vibe.
Avatar
Cringey, confessional, personal stories and interviews are way cheaper to print—minimal travel and research, freelancers can do it, no insurance. Women are used to reading/writing them, and they’ve always been a staple of women’s magazines & websites. Apparently they’re hitting men’s sites, too.

Phil will post the craziest ass stories I've ever seen with no editorial comment, but this one actually made him question himself. Incredible.

After reading this article, I feel really good about myself for never hosting parties
Avatar
Not that it'd make a difference if it weren't, but this is so badly written
Avatar
I think she should spend less time writing and more time in therapy. But what do I know.

I don’t know who these people are, and you can’t make me learn

I think the one with the last name "Swift" might be dating a famous athlete. Maybe a hockey player?

It's so obnoxious that it makes you want to fire off everyone involved with the article into the phantom zone
Avatar
I just read it because of your note. It reminded me how awkward I've felt from time to time around talented people I admire. Maybe that's the point? How stupid we can be and sound? In those situations, as Mike Birbiglia has ruefully noted, "What I should have said was nothing."
Avatar
This is the kind of idea that is so far from my experience that it might as well be written by an alien.
Avatar
And yet I read the only thing. 😱

Avatar
It’s giving Caroline Calloway but somehow more shameless and less funny.
Avatar
In the last century I wrote my first and only piece that was widely read enough to receive criticism, and this reads similarly to that piece, so the cringe is so amplified for me LOL
