Tech by trade, politics and law by hobby. But, like, trying not to be the type of person you'd assume that describes? 😬

I think humanity went off the rails the first time someone wished they knew what time it was.

I'm up to five as of today, and apparently I can't @ microsoft.com in my posts anymore, even though it's still a valid account... is there a technical detail here I'd need to be more of a reply guy to understand, @bsky.app?
Third time I've had to help my mom force quit a fullscreen loudly-beeping malware scam because she clicked on a recommended "news" link on @microsoft.com's Edge/MSN home page and an ad took over. Curate, defend, or gtfo out of that business please.

Me: types "powder dish " into my shopping list: Autocomplete: "powder dish detergent"? Me: "powder dish d"... Autocomplete: "powder dish dish"? Jeez, sorry I interrupted your train of thought, man.

Trump is like if Thanos was the villain in Iron Man's Pal Happy Hogan: someone who may doom the world, but whose evil is so farcical and dumb that we stop analyzing it. Meanwhile Biden gets 39 comic covers with various artists' interpretations of blood dripping from his wrinkled hands.

Are there any specific projects Gates or Brandt have referenced when they claim that AI might lead to "climate solutions"? Like, they should then also have to provide some evidence that those efforts might actually work... but do they even bother naming any of them in the first place?

Starter packs in this context are an incredibly clever idea. Imagine if they came with mixtapes of the best posts from those accounts.
Today, we’re releasing starter packs — personalized invites that allow you to bring friends directly into your slice of Bluesky! 🚀 Update to version 1.87 of the app or refresh desktop to create a starter pack. (It may take a moment for version 1.87 to appear in the iOS App/Google Play stores.)

Couldn't disagree more, I was definitely thinking of driving to NYC on my way from New Mexico to Colorado when I was typing in this search.
Google Maps somehow managed to stop working reliably to search places, the one thing it was still better than the alternatives for. Results now seem kinda random, with places showing up one time out of 3 to 5. Even gas stations! I was about to drive 20m out of the way, then repeated the search.

At what age do all the "New ____" cities/states/provinces/etc. get to drop the "New"? Asking in particular for Newfoundland, lazily named even by colonialist standards.

All of the great art and craft from history was write-once-read-many, but couldn't have happened without thousands of rewrite-many-do-once steps.
When I notice a piece of copy on an app, I envision the multiple hours and discussions behind it. This is my curse of knowledge.

Long techie thread: In light of the vscode extension malware thing, I wanted to talk about the embarrassing state of standalone git GUIs on Linux. But more than that, we are exposed to more incidents like the xz exploit, because we rely on components without enough accountability or backing. 1/16

My new headcanon is that the plot of Coyote vs. Acme was that their user manuals were AI-generated, and that's why he kept being horribly injured by their instructions. Featuring testimony from a non-animation roadrunner, voiced by Ving Rhames: "C'mon, these diagrams look nothing like me."

So weird that they responded with a URL, I'd have gone with "yes" or "no"

The modern struggle of not wanting to buy from an established brand because they've probably been captured by Jack Welch clones cutting corners, nor from an unknown brand that might be outright fraudulent, nor from a well-intentioned local business supplied by the other two.

I feel this way when shows describe or show a URL with backslashes
today i watched an episode of a tv show where they referred to an ip address as an "isp address." so i called 911, and they sent a couple of officers. i explained everything that happened and showed them the tv i saw it on. they took some photos and said a detective will probably call me later today
