open street maps exists, but doesn't have the same satellite and/or streetview datasets that Google owns

Yeah, the big thing being I'm often in towns of like 400 people to find a business to ensure they meet our criteria and google maps can't be beat for their coverage of rural areas in SK.
oh, I don't trust them, and a part of liberating that data would be to allow public audit and correction of it

Don't trust emaps. When my spouse delivered, Google maps were required yet dangerously wrong.
The most perilous? A dark early eve, the claimed bridge ahead did NOT actually exist. Something told them to not trust it, and I'm so glad they listened---turned out the drop would have killed them.🤬
I can't get maps of every town I have to go to. Most maps would be so outdated. Emaps are better than paper maps for my usage.
That said, I do tend to research the areas I'm going into to see if I can avoid surprises

For me and a lot of others, it's a matter of learning from experience. I've picked up a great deal because I've nearly died a whole bunch of times from a whole bunch of different causes.
