Connections will only help so much. You still have to meet educational, physical, mental, and moral requirements that are pretty un-waiverable, and once nominated, if you get appointed (which is a next step run by academy admissions), you have to have a credible shot at succeeding there.

Still disagree. I got Sherrod Brown's nomination with absolutely no connections or prep, pure gumption and acing the interview. Some decades later I ran Marcia Fudge's nomination process and I don't recall panelists I selected knew any of the applicants and I instituted a very objective score system

I believe he was an enlisted Marine. I'd contest the assertion about being 'connected.' It certainly helps, and anecdotally it certainly seems that the officer caste and academy graduates is increasingly nepotistic, but just because nominations are congressional does not mean you need a connection.
