When I was adopting my first cat from a shelter in Manhattan 10 years ago, there was a cop looking at dogs at the same time. He brought a test dog out for a walk while the staff walked an abused older dog. The abused dog, frightened, clamped on to the neck of the small dog the cop was walking.

The cop almost immediately pulled out his gun and pointed it at the dog. Everyone started screaming. The staff were livid. They eventually got him to put the gun away, but then he immediately pulled out pepper spray and started spraying the abused dog to get him to unlatch.

I finished my paperwork and left before the fumes got to me. When I came back a few days later to pick up my cat, I was told they had to destroy the abused dog. Fucking wild.

I used to do a lot of animal rescue and am genuinely terrified of cops being around dogs--any animal, but dogs especially.

Not to mention that killing animals is a classic warning sign for psychopaths.

Are cops in countries where police don't typically carry guns constantly getting mauled by dogs? I kinda doubt it but I don't really have information either way. I especially wonder about the UK where there are very few armed cops but tons of aggressive dogs (neutering male dogs less common there)

Radley Balko once mentioned in a piece that postal carriers, traditionally at risk of dog bites, have been provided training that helps them avoid or calm potentially aggressive dogs and thus the number of biting incidents dropped.

I read it quite a while ago, but it was implying that the police haven't received similar training because "not shooting things" just isn't a priority for them.

Our police force fundamentally misunderstands the seperation of powers, will as a rule acquit itself of any wrongdoing, has fumbled basically every high profile investigation in my lifetime and dedicate huge resources to protecting fascist. They're not great guys, they're just not militarized.
