Abrams' mystery box novel (S.) always makes me cringe a lot at his writing, but I acknowledge novels are not scripts, and they are very different disciplines
so many movies I loved as a younger person were written by Lucas
funny thing is I still love them today because they're great stories
not everything Lucas did was great, but a lot of it was, as evidenced by the world's reaction to his stories
Abrams and Lucas both have the same strength imo, they both know how to frame scenes beautifully and create compelling action, but both need someone there to pull them back from their worst impulses when it comes to scripts.
Lucas doesn't like writing. He procrastinates like a mofo, then turns in completed work just as it's supposed to be finalized for production. Then there's no time for revisions and they shoot what they've got.
Only if a 9-year-old child is hired to read over the finished product and mark up all the places time, space and physics are blatantly ignored so the characters can move from cool scene to cool scene.
At least Lucas and Abrams understand that the dialogue needs to actually be intelligible, unlike some whose movies I generally won’t watch unless they’re captioned.
