I would have Lucas plot the story and then Abrams write the script, that where their native strengths as writers are to me
Is Lucas a worse writer than JJ Abrams?

I say, give the Rogue One / Andor guys a blank check and tell them to have fun.

More Tony Gilroy projects for sure

Lucas should plot the *whole* story in advance. Just in case lol
Avatar
Also, both those guys are really good at casting.
Avatar
That’s Abrams’ superpower, more than anything else.
Avatar
I would not let Abrams anywhere near the script.

Abrams' mystery box novel (S.) always makes me cringe a lot at his writing, but I acknowledge novels are not scripts, and they are very different disciplines
Avatar
S. was written by Doug Dorst, Abrams just provided the concept
Avatar
Absolute waste of paper either way

so many movies I loved as a younger person were written by Lucas funny thing is I still love them today because they're great stories not everything Lucas did was great, but a lot of it was, as evidenced by the world's reaction to his stories

I'm not sure Villeneuve would be a great match for an Abrams script. They don't use dialogue the same way.
Avatar
Fair, I was thinking more of the commitment and attention to detail that Villeneuve brings, but a good point about dialogue direction.
Avatar
Abrams and Lucas both have the same strength imo, they both know how to frame scenes beautifully and create compelling action, but both need someone there to pull them back from their worst impulses when it comes to scripts.
Avatar
Abrams is the casting director only.
Avatar
In a perfect world Lucas would settle comfortably in as an ideas guy, hiring the best people to convey his vision
Avatar
And none of them directing, please.

I'd have Abrams produce, I'm not a fan of his writing.
Avatar
I saw something years ago where Lucas said that his talents are best served in the editing room. Or words to that effect.

Lucas doesn't like writing. He procrastinates like a mofo, then turns in completed work just as it's supposed to be finalized for production. Then there's no time for revisions and they shoot what they've got.
Avatar
Only if a 9-year-old child is hired to read over the finished product and mark up all the places time, space and physics are blatantly ignored so the characters can move from cool scene to cool scene.
Avatar
(I’d just hire Joe Cornish or Travis Knight instead.)
Avatar
At least Lucas and Abrams understand that the dialogue needs to actually be intelligible, unlike some whose movies I generally won’t watch unless they’re captioned.
Avatar
Abrams is great at openings but less so at wrapping up a satisfying ending.
