I’ve promised to family that if I ever earn enough money, the large print section at the local library was getting a big donation in my late grandmother’s name, large enough for them to put her on a plaque. They kept her reading potboiling political thrillers nearly to the end of her 98 years.
So @edburmila.bsky.social, it’s 8 hours later, and you’re now on my list of enemies to destroy. Let me explain. I had a paper route in the Chicago ‘burbs in the 80s. And your well-meaning car dealership reference now has my brain pouring out ALL the old dealership ads that I used to have to put
into the paper, and all the attendant jingles are running through my head like the world’s most annoying mixtape. Celozzi-Ettleson! Jim M’Lady! Biggers!, Bob Rohrman! Howard Pontiac! Al Piemonte! You bastard! YOU BASTARD!
Well THIS person has far more credibility than anyone else here, I’d listen to them. And maybe see if they can get you at the front of the line for an immigration visa.
Solar radiation, which in the absence of an atmosphere can be challenging to protect against. The other thing an atmosphere does is provide temperature consistency by allowing for thermal convection, which the moon doesn't have, so your structure would be undergoing huge thermal swings in the open.
Reminder of when the House GOP of the 114th Congress picked all white dudes as committee chairs…except for the House Admin Committee, which duties include “services to the House, including food services, parking, facilities, and admin” and gave THAT role to a woman.
For a less contemporary example, we can go back to the anti-Communist laws of the 50s that curtailed association and organizations based on a political test as well.
Individuals, no, business, yes. As an example, Texas’s modified anti-BDS law was upheld by the Fifth Circuit in 2023, and that prohibits any state contracts or funding from going to companies (larger than 10ppl, IIRC) that engage in BDS activity.
I wasn’t trying to make it “about” Israel as much as I was noting that there are laws being considered/passed already that are aimed at preventing “voting with your wallet”. The BDS movement is just the current target of that legislation.
The number of conversations I’ve had with people arguing that yes, I ALSO want fewer guns out there, but it seems a terrible idea to unilaterally disarm in the face of explicit violent ideation and threats.
And to add on to the “arm yourself” discussion, recall too that the purpose isn’t so much to be able to defeat a posse in a heated shootout, it’s to deter that sort of aggression by making yourself (and others) a known hard target.
And for the love of God, get an account and groups (of vetted, verified individuals) on Signal. It’s never too early to be thinking about communications security, and while Signal is imperfect, it’s the best mass-market solution that I know of.
