This would be like the Irish government deciding yer man who wrote The Boy in the Striped Pajamas had meaningful things to say about LGBTQ+ policy. Utter madness.

I’m often very negative about Ireland but thank Christ we’re better than that

I don't know. SF, FF, and FG all made a lurch to the right on immigration when they thought there were votes in it. All it will take is someone with a platform and a bit of charisma to bang the anti-trans drum for a while.
Avatar
Thank god they only have that wet fish Joe Duffy doing it right now.

I'm not sure. They'd have to convince us all that female spaces were traditionally this lovely safe space which the history of the Laundries and Irish nuns would rather cast doubt on.
Avatar
Well yeah it can get worse here, our media seems to want us to be more like the UK with the culture wars. I just hope they don’t get their way.
Avatar
Our trans health care is worse than the NHS. The calls are already coming from inside the health service.
Avatar
Our entire health care system is terrible, though.
Avatar
This is obstruction the highest levels, a process which is utterly out of step with best medical practice, and EU standards.
Avatar
I'm sure it is. But we recently had a surgeon putting in off the shelf screws into children's backs and a psychiatrist prescribing insane levels of drugs to children with depression, so it's always hard here to work out what's malice and what is general not caring about any marginalized people.

Oh lord i know it. But I keep hoping for an improvement.

Not until they are willing to cancel Certian consultants contracts.
Avatar
Labour is not going to find a rational middle-ground policy on trans people existing, that's just stupid. JKR is not a good faith actor - how do they not see that?
Avatar
Pretty sure they agree with her going by their decisions.
Avatar
Sadly this^ They have refused to punish let alone remove extremely transphobic members from their party, even letting them continue to speak on said matters... so the conclusion is that the leadership think the same.
Avatar
I can think of a billion reasons they might want her on side
Avatar
Labour understands that Rowling is not acting in good faith. But this is a non-issue because neither is Labour.

Getting policy advice from a woman who is an expert on where wizards shit. We are a very normal country.
Avatar
She made a hissy fit at them and now they're talking to her, she's getting what she asked for but she shouldn't expect anything.
Avatar
At this point I don't think anything short of DNA tests at toilet doors will satisfy her. She's so obsessed that even Elon Musk told her to stop banging on about it.

Labour Party: Now why don't you tell us why you're wrong
Avatar
I've never got over John Boyne putting Legend of Zelda recipes in his totally serious and thoroughly researched historical novel.
Avatar
I guess once you've sailed through being rebuked by the Auschwitz Museum with basically no reputational consequences, you figure you might as well.
Avatar
Mistake, or on purpose, as a joke? What I am asking is, is he John Boyne Jovial?
Avatar
While I respect the heck out of your pun, he’s definitely a total hack
Avatar
Remembering the time he claimed to be the most translated and best selling Irish author EVER.
Avatar
He needs to get some cop on
Avatar
He never will as long as he gets a free pass from the media about things like this.

Who hasn't enjoyed a lovely bowl of Octorok stew?
Avatar
Whomst among us wouldn’t be taken in by such obviously real world ingredients as Oktorok eyeballs, lizalfos tails and Hylian shrooms?
Avatar
And this is before AI started doing Google searches!
Avatar
What the hell did he think a lizalfos was? I need to know
Avatar
I mean, this is the same guy who wrote a book repeatedly misgendering a trans girl, with her forced detranition as part of a happy ending, as well as the perennial classic, “Guys, we should be more sympathetic to the feelings of the Nazis running Auschwitz”
Avatar
I remember that! So freaking weird.
Avatar
As Glen says, why wouldn’t you even question those names?
Avatar
I feel like (apropos of several stories), some authors end up incredibly isolated, and the outcomes are weird and not good.
Avatar
I hate to say it but I agree with Rowling on one point. I, too, think very little of Starmer's "character".
Avatar
Avatar
Can’t wait for them to meet Tommy Robinson to discuss immigration policy.
Avatar
I just posted those exact words elsewhere.
Avatar
They’re just making it so difficult. It should be an easy decision!

Or to put it another way, Labour hoping to sell off our human rights and health care for party donations. Whoever thought they were any different to the Tories?
Avatar
It'd almost be better if they were in this for the donations, but I suspect it's more about what they believe (or at least what some of them believe) than that. It's also got to be a minuscule number of votes that would be swung by this issue.
Avatar
British public about to get mugged again - having been robbed by the Tories for 14 years the only way they can get rid of them is by voting in other Tories with different colour rosettes.
Avatar
I know they won't but I would love to live in a world where they kept shouting questions about minor points of Potter lore.
