(Heinlein) Humans will reject a moral argument if they believe it's going to cost them to be moral. Pointing out that not only does it NOT cost them, it benefits them, is a good tactic.

that's right. sometimes i reply to someone stating my own variation on their ideas as a way of seconding them

the reason to do it is because it's a moral imperative, but also, the average chinese restaurant in my town is thoroughly mediocre, and improving the quality of chinese food in my town is... not a *good* reason to do it, but also not *not* a good reason to do it

America really ought to be aggressively brain-draining any country that even slightly annoys us. "Oh, you won't sign this trade agreement? Ooops, free citizenship for the first ten thousand doctors from your country. So as we were saying..." Like, it's a moral good *and* vicious realpolitik.

I agree with half of that. Just based on my firsthand and secondhand experience going to university with Chinese students, the barriers to get in *and stay in* might be a little too low... but if they do graduate, the pathway from there to citizenship needs to be made way, way simpler than it is.

at a glance, this could also make the US a contender in international go tournaments, so _aside_ from the moral and realpolitik aspects, it's clearly necessary

The 20k is entirely selfish because they'd fold that back into the community immediately!

Admittedly the process of making people citizens and then helping them set up bank accounts find housing and like a six month funded buffer time to find work would be expensive and take a lot of time but I'm already pie in the sky utopianing here

you don't even need to pressure people into immigrating you just need to allow people to come

Worth noting this doesn't mean we don't bother with vetting or ignore people involved in illegal activity after they arrive. The vast majority will be here with a plan to thrive as part of US society, because they rejected the Chinese system.
