North Carolina GOP advanced a new congressional gerrymander with 10 safe GOP seats, 3 safe Dem seats, & 1 GOP-trending swing district in a key swing state It would be among America's most extreme gerrymanders & replace a court-drawn map that went 7D-7R in 2022 davesredistricting.org/join/e595a26...

NC Republicans passed the above congressional map out of state Senate committee earlier today & are expected to pass the final version into law later this week. Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper lacks the power to veto it (& the GOP could override him anyway). Background: www.dailykos.com/stories/2023...

Is there any legal recourse? Or is this a done deal?

I'm sure @marcelias.bsky.social will be all over this. He and his legal team are battling these things all over red states this year.

Majority GOP supreme court Its done
Avatar
No, it's not done. Marc's team has been winning case after case already. SCOTUS has not protected the clearly unconstitutional gerrymandering cases brought before it that Marc's team has fought.
Avatar
“SCOTUS might make it 4 dem seats” is not the reassurance you think it is
Avatar
it's not just Marc. His blue sky feed to the contrary.

As an Alabama resident I can tell you from recent experience: it is not a “done deal.” I’d wager this map is far too extreme for Kavanaugh and Roberts to stake their reputations on, just as Alabama’s was.
Avatar
if it was court ordered 7-7 last time im guessing this means the court changed since last time?
Avatar
Yes. 2022 gave the GOP a majority so they up and reheard the case.
Avatar
Didn't the supreme court recently tell Alabama they had to redraw their map?
Avatar
They have to find a racial argument as they did in AL to tie to to VRA. They won't act on political gerrymandering alone, no matter how obvious. At least not yet. Though I do see some cracks in this court. They don't like how Alito thinks he's king - my guess anyway.
Avatar
Yes. There are currently 15-18 Republican-held seats in the House that were created by illegal gerrymandering. It's grotesque.
Avatar
Avatar
Does District 1 create a VRA issue that could land this in federal court?
Avatar
Probably done. The 2022 map was the legal recourse and then NC voters gave them the power in 2022 to overturn it. It should be illegal, by NC and federal law, but neither Supreme Court is going to overturn it. Hell, the federal Supreme Court basically told them how to do it.

California and New York should gerrymander Republican districts into oblivion to incentivize Republicans to pass a voting rights act.
Avatar
New York tried but the GOP-dominated courts threw out the maps and imposed GOP-slanted ones. (How is it that the GOP still has so much power in NY? I suspect Satan.)
Avatar
But without red districts in NY, how else would we end up with comedic gold mines like George Santos?

A reminder of the actual partisan breakdown of NC voters, based on the past two elections.
Avatar
A fair map would be 6 of each party and 2 swing districts, but fair maps are too much for the GOP to handle

Federal gerrymandering ban now

They have to cheat to win.
Avatar
Relieving former slave states from oversight in legislative redistricting was a great idea.
Avatar
They can't win if they can't cheat.
Avatar
GOP knows they are losing the demographic war (in their mind) so this is the only way they can stay in power.
Avatar
They are the party that rigs elections.
Avatar
In a true democracy, districts would be assigned on a population-based grid, with slight adjustments for density, but no adjustments based on party.
Avatar
Surprisingly close to a decent electoral map based on geography alone.
Avatar
based on geography alone, i count at least eight districts that make no sense, including, for example, the three whose borders are a bunch of squiggly lines designed to make sure greensboro doesn't elect a democrat
Avatar
Yup. 5 doesn’t look /that/ bad geographically, but it manages to include Boone, Winston-Salem, part of Greensboro, AND enough rural counties to still be red. Wild.
Avatar
This what I had in mind. I have seen much more convoluted gerrymandering.
Avatar
that claw on the southeastern side of 5 reaching into greensboro and scratching every democrat in its path seems pretty damn convoluted to me
Avatar
As I said, this county are pretty compact. This could be much worst and indicate how relatively easy is to manipulate the electoral map with today software.

Your bio being in French makes me think you're not an expert on NC demographics and geography.
Avatar
County boundaries do not look as manipulated as you would expect if you just watch the shape of them. This was the meaning of my comment.
Avatar
If you knew the geography better you'd know that they split Democratic cities in half to dilute their voting power.

Why did they draw with 10 GOP seats? Because they couldn’t draw it with 11.
