Here’s the deal: We stop shaming the poor for buying things that may not be essential, and start shaming the rich for making a profit off things that are essential.
Avatar
this would be great if the rich were capable of shame, but the 2000 or so people who own the majority of all the earth's resources aren't.
Avatar
In lieu of shame, legal and monetary penalties scaled for the ultra-wealthy will be an acceptable substitution.
Avatar
And if that doesn't work, we should start eating them.
We say that, and it does have *some* legitimacy, but if it were entirely true they wouldn't have to spend so much on PR to make them look as if they're *not* sociopathic cunts.

that's what HR is for: to keep the psychopath c-suite assholes from negatively affecting the shareholder dividends

As a poor I just want to go right ahead and say that my weed is absolutely essential.

but but what if I want to be rich one day?? 😭

Pull yourself up by your faux Prada bootstraps my friend! The invisible hand will give you a push!

No, the poor should only spend their money on absolute necessities and save every spare dollar until they can afford to buy stock in a company that is about to be destroyed by naked short sellers.
Avatar
If the rich can buy so much nonessential bullshit, why can't the poor?? Also, my books are extremely essential!!

Profiteering off essentials has to be crime.

Yup, but no one does anything to stop it because governments back it, worldwide. Energy, which is a necessity, water, list goes on. Make disgusting profits on it. Governments could stop it, if governments worked in the interest of the many instead of the poor, we should be more french.

Here is a story about a scam from Shoppers Drug Mart regarding the profiteering from medications upon the province 😡 www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Wow. Shocked but not surprised.

Hear FUCKING hear!
And we broaden our understanding of what essential means. We deserve to thrive, not just survive. And we survive a lot longer if we're less stressed or (sarcastic gasp) HAPPY 💔

Sounds good to me. There's too much hatred of the poor for daring to have something nice or to not constantly be suffering, and I've read that comes from garbage Christian beliefs that being poor is a moral sin and you gotta atone for it.

If I had to spend half my wage on my gas bill then found out how much profit british gas made I think I'd blow the other half on vodka.

Have had this so often I felt guilty to share or even to buy something for myself

It sucks the wealthy are inedible, and toxic to humans.

Yeah, I think about this when women talk of buying sanitary products. What a fucked up world we live in where basic bodily hygiene is seen as so privileged it can come at a premium, when in actuality, hygiene is a fucking national healthcare issue. Did we all collectively forget health class?

people are struggling just to pay rent with two jobs - ah the american dream

if it keeps me from wanting to kms it's essential LOL
Would be nice if people recognized that recreation is a powerful psychological need, even for poor people. So maybe people should stop ragging on people treating themselves once in a while.
Avatar
Can we not shame anybody and just spread positivity?
Avatar
Idk, some people need to be shamed 🙄 you've seen humanity? 😕
Avatar
Pitting the middle class against the poor while hoarding resources that could help literally everyone deserves shaming. There’s nothing positive about that.

Because there’s no reason to shame poor people for buying things people who don’t know them or share their lives have decided aren’t essential.
Avatar
Maybe “shame” and “essential” are the wrong words. But I know a lot of less than well off people who buy stupid shit and would benefit from some financial education. It doesn’t help that one of the predominant messages of capitalism is that happiness depends on possessions.
Avatar
Buying something that's "not essential" and buying "stupid shit" are not the same thing. You are doing the wealthy a huge favor by conflating the two.
Avatar
"Not essential" is, like, junk food or a decent smartphone or a bigger tv or weed or beauty products. "Stupid shit" is putting yourself in a decade of debt to have this year's Dodge F-550 with lift kit and snorkel and whatever other toys your heart desires. Very different things.

Whoa boy I gave some of y'all the wrong impression. I was talking about how rhetorically, the non essentials are often grouped with luxuries. The people who talk like this tend to think of essentials as "exactly enough to live a simple joyless life and no more". I was disagreeing with that notion.
Avatar
Do you know a lot of poor people who do that? Most of the poor people I know couldn't possibly get enough credit to do that.
