Horse drawn buggies had a board just in front of the driver to block mud dashed up (thrown up) by horse hooves. It was called the 'dashboard'. So every use of "dashboard" in cars, apps, whatever: originally referred to a physical board to block horse s&*t from getting in your mouth.
