I agree that that default would be ideal for many reasons. It's how most people would use DMs; it'll also prevent ugly surprises for big accounts, and for anyone who's been off the platform for a while who suddenly comes back after DMs launch.
From accounts you follow with request option from accounts you don't follow. If it's a brand new account there needs to be a hold somehow to prevent spam.
bad actors have been making burner accounts for a couple of weeks just to tell trans women they're men.
if you default to "from everyone", guess what's going to happen before people can react and change their settings.
every single change you make, every feature you add, you need to approach from the following:
- what is the maximum amount of harm i could do with this?
- what is the likely amount of harm in [some window of time] that will occur before further changes must be discussed?
Off because there will likely be some bug that crops up in the future that temporarily defaults everyone to the default, and Off both highlights the bug when it happens and keeps people that have it off for safety reasons safe.
I think everything should default to off, as long as people are informed about it, just like all the autoplay should be off by default, etc. but that's just imo
Although on further reflection, "off by default" might be better. And there might be other useful visibility levels, like "only allow from people on a list". It's worth doing some social threat modeling to get it right.
sorry turbo paul I am rethinking this now and the DEFAULT should be "off" with the others as options. For the love of god do not make the default "everyone," this is a choice every person has to make for themselves.
Although I'm likely to just have my DMs open, I firmly believe the default should be "OFF."
Options of "followers," "following," and "mutual" might be a top-tier selection.
