What's next for Bluesky? We're working on some of your most requested features: DMs, video, improved Custom Feeds, better anti-harassment features, and a new login tool called "OAuth" Check out the roadmap here: bsky.social/about/blog/0...

can you please add soft blocking

I should add: it's not because of being against it. It's a technical issue that would require a ton of problem solving, on top of what they're already doing. I also want to point out to people that feature requests would be more visible to the devs as GitHub issues than as comments.

do i look like i know what a github issue is
Avatar
It's that thing where nerds feel smarter yelling about something there than in a normal place (it's me, im nerds)

Lol this is just a blatant misrepresentation of what I'm saying. I'm saying the devs don't run the official bluesky account. They do, however, look at GitHub issues. If you want a feature implemented into software, why wouldn't you go to the website the developers interact with every day and ask?
Avatar
I think you can still file feature requests from the blue Feedback button on the sidebar menu.

How I feel whenever people talk about coding or whatever on this website
Avatar
In hindsight yeah that's fair. GitHub's UI can be confusing.
Avatar
TL;DR: Basically you go to where the source code of the AT protocol is hosted(github.com/bluesky-soci...) and open something called an issue. The devs are much more likely to see that than a comment under Bluesky's official account, which the devs don't run AFAIK.

Wasn't soft blocking more of an accidental consequence/helpful bug more than a planned feature?
Avatar
I think so, yeah but it's also possible to just plan and implement, as it is useful current protocol implementation for following doesn't allow that tho

what happens when you block and unblock now? they stay a follower?
Avatar
Can DM be made selective, so you can choose who can DM you?
Avatar
Yes! We'll start with 3 things you can choose from: off, people you follow, or anyone
Avatar
And the default will be people you follow, is that correct?
Avatar
We've been discussing this and I don't want to talk out of turn, but of the 3 options do folks generally feel that would be the best default?
Avatar
emphatically throwing my two-cents in for the default of dms being "from accounts you follow" ☺️
Avatar
I agree that that default would be ideal for many reasons. It's how most people would use DMs; it'll also prevent ugly surprises for big accounts, and for anyone who's been off the platform for a while who suddenly comes back after DMs launch.
Avatar
From accounts you follow with request option from accounts you don't follow. If it's a brand new account there needs to be a hold somehow to prevent spam.

Avatar
YES. Please never auto-opt in any all-inclusive updates or features. Everyone hates that!
Avatar
People you follow, PLEASE (if not Mutual Follows Only)
Avatar
PLEASE I would love nothing more than for unsolicited DMs from strangers to be off by default.
Avatar
Avatar
Off because there will likely be some bug that crops up in the future that temporarily defaults everyone to the default, and Off both highlights the bug when it happens and keeps people that have it off for safety reasons safe.
Avatar
Fuuuck I wish that wasnt such a good point
Avatar
Avatar
For sure, makes sure new users know the feature exists while also protecting people from spam/brigading by default
Avatar
Avatar
Yeah, anything but auto-on.
Avatar
I think everything should default to off, as long as people are informed about it, just like all the autoplay should be off by default, etc. but that's just imo
Avatar
Avatar
Speaking as a trans woman who set my DMs on Twitter to that the second I realized I was about to be a woman online: Yes that's the best default by far
Avatar
Why yes. Yes it would. Thank you for asking us folks.
Avatar
Definitely off by default. Thank you tho for being considerate and shipping this feature with an option to close them right from the start!
Avatar
Also voting for 'people you follow' as the default!
Avatar
agreed. and, open to everybody is the *worst* choice for default from an anti-harassment perspective.
