A conversation on our Discord has prompted me to say again: remember, y'all, what really sells books is not the author talking about their work, but *readers* talking about it. Word of mouth drives far more sales than advertising or any other engine. So if you loved a book, tell your friends!

Also, when a book you like goes on sale, it's always good to share with friends that way too! e.g. I would probably never have read @marthawells.bsky.social wonderful Witch King book if she hadn't shared that the ebook was on sale recently (as well as the Award nominations!)

And I also shared the sale with others, at least doubling the sales from my view! ;)

This is absolutely true haha. I was struggling to find a sci-fi series to jump into after finishing the expanse and a random post online basically was gushing over "Children of Time". Gave it a try after a lot of misses with other books and it was so good! Really excited to read the sequels ~

Also: join a book club! In person, online, Zoom, whatever. Word of mouth multiplier!!!!

I can't tell you how often I ask people to tell others about our books, but it's just not that easy. It takes a monumental amount of effort to open your mouth or type something on a keyboard. Apparently.

It's like pulling teeth nowadays cause you don't wanna force it but people gotta realize advertising is a hard bag by yourself. Any bit helps even just 'HEY THIS IS GREAT' or else you'll be stuck in that neverending sea.

Did a pretty good Facebook ad last week, had over a hundred people click to the Amazon site and not a single sale. I'm flabbergasted.

I notice that a lot too, people are less willing to follow links off-site anymore. It's created a terrible atmosphere where if they can't get it on the app then they won't bother. Gone are the days of people being more proactive in searching for new content.

Well, I can't very well sell a book off of Facebook. Hmm. Or can I? I suppose I could sell the ebook right from the platform, as a downloadable file. 🤔 Maybe in the marketplace... Oh, Amazon would just love that.

Happily, telling my friends about books I loved is my favorite activity😄

Me: (making an entire YouTube video about how much I love an obscure out-of-print book) Yeah this works lmao
Avatar
Non-zero chances you make the day of the author and/or other fans of that obscure book!

I've gotten into the habit of that with the stuff I'm reading! Lately I've been reading more queer fiction, indie authors, and TTRPGs

I find this is true for a lot of mediums. Games, streamers, movies. It's all driven by the good fun of sharing.

The majority of my book buying is based on authors recommending books they’ve read. That is how I find most authors new to me. First on Twitter but now here.

"Hell's Gate" by Bill Schutt is pretty good.

I hope to have gotten at least a few people to read the lady Trent series. I actually doodled something about the wing mechanism you had described because it was so darn intriguing!
Avatar
Delighted to hear it! And legitimately, it's people like you who have kept that series continuously in print for a decade and counting.
Avatar
I came to them so late and loved them so much. :D

I mean I don't think I've ever seen a book advertised to me. Like I'm sure that's not true just statistically but I can't think of a specific time

What’s this discord community? Can I join it as well as an author?

It's run by me and Alyc Helms for our readers; you're entirely welcome to join, but it's not a general-purpose book server, if that's what you're looking for. discord.com/invite/uyqXY...

Word of mouth is more genuine. Advertising is more needy.

Too many have forgotten that and instead choose to talk about the ones they hate.

Worried that this will be my book's fate (Even if I am on draft 1.5) tbh
