in all the (appropriate) memorializing of Shelley Duvall as a performer in the work of male auteur directors, spare a thought for her own auteur work: Faerie Tale Theatre was one of the few actually good media products aimed at children in the 1980s, but because it didn't sell toys it's forgotten

TOPIC: Define "picture book." Or "middle grade." What makes a book YA? Is it simply age range? Or how it's shelved in the library? Do you have a firm grasp of the categories and where your writing and/or art fits? #kidlitchat

I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:
if you’re waiting for everyone around you to wake up, you’ll wait forever. this is how the people grinding our bones to make their bread WANT you to be. paralyzed, alienated & purposeless

Occasionally I pause to contemplate how crazy it is that a book that takes me 6 to 8 months to write, you can read in less than a day. Art is wild.

This thread. Posting for my reference because I need to DO something about the general madness instead of just wringing my hands and losing sleep.
Ok - this is a question I get a LOT, and am starting to get a lot again. Here are a few tips on calling electeds: 1. Try not to stress too much about the method of contact - e.g. email/calling. The important thing is getting in touch.

Google’s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoft’s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools. Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped.

Library funding is almost always justified through patron numbers. The more people a library serves, the more funding it gets. So even if you don't regularly use a public library, get a library card. It costs you nothing and helps everyone in your community.
today is my NINETEEN YEAR anniversary working at my local library In honor of that, I ask you to get a card to your local public library today! If you ALREADY have a card to your local public library, check out their digital resources! Their summer programs! And yeah, they have books too.

Instead of celebrating independence with fireworks, why not try: - 20 questions with an enchanted skull - tea party with the twig witch - making mead with dark druids - crafting patriotic costumes out of moss - disappearing into the dark forest, and gossiping with owls

It’s summer in the Northern Hemisphere. But while you indulge in long, balmy days at the beach or elsewhere in nature, you may be surprised to learn that our planet is creeping toward its greatest distance from the sun, a point known as aphelion. Here’s what to know about this celestial event.
Our Planet Is About to Reach Its Greatest Distance From the Sunwww.nytimes.com Earth whirls around the sun in an ellipse, rather than a circle. On Friday the planet will reach its farthest point from its star, known as aphelion.

4th of July thread in the best way.
A FAIRYTALE FOR THE FOURTH OF JULY. If 2024 was a Laurel Snyder middle grade novel, Biden would come to Harris and be like, "Pssst, Kamala, No malarkey, I've got a CRAZY idea." She'd be all, "Tell me about it, Joe!"
