damn. using racist lies about major theft rings to cover up their understaffing, low inventory, and locked-up products didn't work?????
Walgreens will close a “significant portion” of its 8,600 U.S. locations over the next three years as it struggles to keep up with a rapidly evolving retail pharmacy industry, the company announced Thursday.
Walgreens to shutter many stores as profits tumblewapo.st The retail pharmacy giant expects to close a “significant portion” of its 8,600 U.S. locations over the next three years.

One of the big unmentioned reasons for the closure is that these pharmacies, including Walgreens, have multi-billion opioid settlements against them. Walgreens is on the hook for $5.5 billion. www.mlive.com/public-inter...

Our local Rite Aid is one of the stores that is closing.

the bankruptcy ploy is an out after pharmaceutical companies starting paying for their role in getting Americans addicted to opioid

Don't forget how roughly half of them are in states where they can just decide whether or not to distribute medications, like mifepristone. I'm seeing a lot of people copping to avoiding Walgreens for this very reason.

I only ever go to my local Walgreens to get shots, because I've known the pharmacist there for thirty years and she's the best ever. Otherwise, absolutely not.
Avatar
Shocking, that no one wants to shop in stores where you can’t buy anything.
Avatar
Their willingness to stop filling mifepristone prescriptions BEFORE laws were passed made me ditch them. IDK about an evolving industry other than they fucking suck ass

It's literally a self caused problem across retail. Sales stink, so some guy in an office somewhere lies to save their job and is like omg retail theft is killing us. When it's not at all higher than it was before the Pandemic. But yea all their solutions make people want to leave 🤷🏿‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️
Avatar
I don't think that I've ever been charged less than double average retail price for anything at Walgreens. Pre-pandemic, they charged three bucks for those dollar bags of candy.
Avatar
True, but CVS makes them look reasonably priced.
Avatar
CVS tried to charge me $400 for a $12 medication. My doctor told me to let him know if it happens again, apparently there is actually a law against that.
Avatar
I live one block from a CVS and once when I was gastro-intestinally distressed I left when I saw what they were charging for a little bottle of Pepto and drove 2 miles to Target instead.

What a shame, i was really loving having to bother an overworked associate over the storewide intercom every time i need any item whatsoever

I live in a small city w/2 major universities & the one near my house was 1 of the busiest in the country but their pharmacists were/are awful. After plan b was available, a couple refused to fill (1 patient was a rape victim) & they were always out on my personal meds w/no eta & 0 fucks given.

It's almost as if the expression "when you point, three fingers point back at you," doesn't miss.
Avatar
I'm sure it has nothing to do with the billions of dollars of opioid settlements they're on the hook for, but would rather we think about something else instead...
Avatar
You can only go to the “blame poor people…” well some many times before, wait. No you can always go to the “blame poor people” well. My bad.
Avatar
I won’t be surprised if most of these 8000 stores are within 2 blocks of not only other Walgreens but other pharmacies. I’m in Chicago and just walked by 3 Walgreens during a half mile stroll to the train.
Avatar
is private equity in the picture anywhere? *goes off to investigate*
Avatar
In this case no, it’s literally billions in opioid related fines.
Avatar
oh RIGHT. Actually same for Rite-Aid.
Avatar
CVS also got whacked for at least 5 billion. Basically every major pharmacy chain in the U.S. was eating from the OxyContin money trough.
Avatar
CVS was never big in Seattle. It's only started showing up more recently. Basically for me, the "best" option is going to Target now. or buy online. :( :(
Avatar
I'm part of the demise of CVS. I used to buy my diet cola from CVS because it was close and cheaper. Then they stopped competing on price. I used to buy my milk from CVS but they started selling almost sour milk. Now the CVS barely stocks milk and doesn't stock caff. free diet cola at all. Economics
Avatar
Yeah, funny how that works. Maybe if they paid enough employees a living wage...

Avatar
Don't forget, caving to anti-abortion lunatics and refusing to stock abortion pills
Avatar
Wait? Lies About theft!?!?
Avatar
The one I went to last week had no baskets because allegedly people steal them. So I should put nail polish and mascara and other itty-bitty items in a freaking cart? It also took 10 minutes for the guy to ring up 2 customers. They just suck.
