Oh, we're doing that? I'm in a flippable R->D district. Currently 3 of 8 reps are Dems, could win +2. Consider donating secure.actblue.com/donate/marc-...

PDX maybe peaked at that level for a couple months in 2018/2019, but never held it consistently. Here's the last 20 years of data for non-stops to markets outside Alaska from Cirium.
Avatar
That's fair. Looking at data from last July, 50% of seats from ANC to other state was on AS. Of the AS traffic, 16% was to SEA (pax not connecting onward, while 26% was n/s to 10 other markets. The other ~58% was connecting via SEA, so it seems to vaguely work.
Avatar
They've talked about bringing the 787s to the mainland (I think the 330s will be retired by the time integration happens), but at SEA for long-haul, not to ANC. There's some value in the hourly "shuttle" service schedule for pax flexibility.
Avatar
Also, seems the sked could work using the same planes and routing it between Europe and ANC via JFK/PHL and DFW: Leave EU 10a, arrive PHL 12p Leave PHL 2p, arrive DFW 4:30p Leave DFW 6p, arrive ANC 10p Leave ANC 12a, arrive DFW 9a Leave PHL 10a, arrive PHL 3p Leave PHL 6p, arrive EU 8a

These times only work for UTC - PT, ES, IE, GB - not UTC+1 (the rest of western Europe).
Avatar
That ended in 2022. Since 2023 DL has operated the route only with 757s
Avatar
Yeah, cruise traffic is mostly what I was thinking as well. But even then I'm not sure it beats using them to Europe, and it is comparable stage length. I wonder if ANC-DFW-PHL/JFK-EU and back would work utilization wise. Otherwise they need somewhere else to go from DFW that's valuable.
Avatar
There's probably a small market for flat beds up to ANC seasonally. The problem is that the season overlaps with when there's also demad for those beds to Europe, with massively higher yields.
Avatar
Sadly no one is flying pax wide-bodies (or anything with a flat bed) up to ANC from the lower 48 anymore. It was certainly easier in 2021 when the 787s didn't have so much in the way long-haul opportunities.

Briefly got excited by an application for codesharing between airBaltic and United Airlines. Turns out it is just for flights the former operates on behalf of Swiss, not a new partnership. #AvGeek

DOJ killed the merger, not DOT. And there have been some aviation regulatory moves the past couple years that favor consumers, but I agree with the overall sentiment that more could/should be done.

Indeed. Though at the same time the airport definitely wasn't fully built when we were there a couple weeks back.

JetBlue shifted $500 million from the 2029 loan to the 2031 bonds. Also, that 2031 debt is priced at 9.875% and $JBLU expects to close on the financing on 27 August.

So, about Nuuk's new airport being ready for international service...maybe not so much. Danish authorities revoked the airport's security authorization, blocking international flights. airgreenland.com/data-pages/i... #AvGeek

I typically stay at an airport walkable to LAX for the morning flight anyways. Conference is down in Long Beach, but those hotels are stupid expensive that week, and I can do the commute easily the afternoon prior.
Avatar
How mad is October me going to be if August me books the 6a departure from LAX under the guise of "getting back to the east coast in time for dinner?" Alternate is ~830a, and probably still gets me home for a slightly late dinner.
Avatar
Good for whom? And how do you quantify those "innovation benefits" against what's happened in the past four years? What other ways can an employer compensate for that balance given the hours of an employee life being taken by commuting again?

Today in Arviat, Nunavut, the government offices and other businesses closed due to extreme weather. Usually, this happens in winter during a bad blizzard. Today, they closed due to extreme heat. In the Arctic. Global warming is real. Temps in central/western Nunavut have been in the 30Cs for a week

Do I yell at Boeing for Starliner, yell at Boeing for SLS, yell at SpaceX for environmental issues, or yell at NASA for cancelling VIPER and stepping down Chandra, hmm space news is so cheery these days

Blocking ads doesn't reduce them, unfortunately. Dunno about the 60 person cap issue you hit. I have lists with hundreds that work very well.
