When I drove through downtown Edinburgh at 20 mph I was shocked at how efficiently traffic flowed and how pleasant the driving was. It also made me realize how the low speed made walking the downtown the day before very pleasant. More cities and towns need to try 30km/h speed limits.

It would be great if the CPC leader could use some of his rallies to tell his supporters Ukrainians aren’t nazis. This is a huge step back from the CPC stance in 2014 when Harper snubbed Putin at the G20. The new guy would do well to learn some “fuck Russia” attitude and support our ally.
A large majority of Canadians have been exposed to Russian false narratives about the war in Ukraine — and people who support the Conservative Party are more susceptible to believing Kremlin disinformation, according to a new report. globalnews.ca/news/1061100...

This is some good news! I’m very happy to hear that this is being set up somewhere in Canada. I hype the other provinces will pay attention and follow suit.

I’ve never heard of Children’s Village before (not from ON). Designing play spaces for kids seems to be a bit of an afterthought, or a nuisance. We look at amazing playgrounds in Denmark and the Netherlands. I’d love to see more of the spirit of Children’s Village in Canadian playgrounds.
Wonderful from @thelocal.bsky.social "Children’s Village was a hit. Families flocked to it and international media praised it, with Time calling it “one of the most imaginative playgrounds in the world.” The next year, the Ontario Place brass gave McMillan control over another section of the park"

The Morris Model sounds great. Fiscal savings and rural self-sufficiency combined. For proof of concept, it’s even in an environment comparable to where most Canadians live.

With a comfortable lead in the polls, you’d think this guy could risk showing up to a pride event and looking like a decent human being at the risk of losing a few voters to the PPC. Is he not that confident in the polls, or just not a decent human being? #cdnpoli www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

I line up for a covid jab just as soon as the authorities say I'm eligible for one. You should too, if you can. (I have friends who can't get jabbed because they're immunosuppressed. I selfishly do not want them to get sick.)
I will absolutely be getting one, I have a book tour and international travel in the fall.

This would be a good policy; it would save lives and reduce healthcare costs. The cost of providing ethical, adequate housing should definitely be part of the cost of business for landlords. Good implementation would protect tenants from rent increases resulting from upgrades also.

The OC Transpo bus I’m on just had its engine shut off suddenly at a bus stop. It was probably only about 20 seconds before it fired back up, but what an awkward, tense silence. Nobody on the bus said a word, just looked expectantly towards the driver. Ottawa has weird transit some days.

This is the first time I’ve heard of this occupation. I’m surprised it wasn’t mentioned in any of my Indigenous Studies classes discussing the activism of the 60s and 70s.
In the summer of 1974, dozens of First Nations youth led by the Ojibway Warriors Society, launched an armed occupation of Anicinabe Park in Kenora, Ont., a couple of hours east of Winnipeg. At 20 years old, Sally Skead was one of them.

Good thread on plastic recycling! Plastic recycling in general seems to be very confusing for people, particularly when it comes to differentiating between what is possible and what is done locally. Key takeaway is that reducing plastic use is higher priority than recycling.
1/ Last year, I became obsessed with a plastic cup. The cup was made via pyrolysis — a kind of chemical recycling I'd heard a lot about. The plastics industry made pyrolysis sound magical. It was a way to turn hard-to-recycle plastics into new plastic. So I tried to buy the cup…

I don’t think this article quite captures how much more Lyme disease we have in Canada compared to 2002, or how that’s likely to increase with ticks having more favourable northern habitat thanks to the warming climate. We’ve got an unreal amount of ticks around, very happy our dog’s vaccinated. 🇨🇦
