Sufficiency, climate action, and nature restoration in Northeast Finland. Board work in district heating. At home on free rivers. 🤠🏕️🎣🏔️🇫🇮
Avatar
In North Karelia the first thing I noticed was that my neighbours were interested in who I am rather than about how I was to other people through work or studies
Sufficiency is like that, learning how to not worry about external things and people. Or to be afraid of them, or your own feelings of social status. In the country side people look at you and want to help out if there are issues.

It truly is odd to hang out with people who are selected for the hardest security roles and they are so busy that extraction isn’t their thing. Sometimes I get this kind of attention with senior men who own land and want to free rivers.
The people I know from the Border Guard only recently got a little more attention now that Russia has been more active in hybrid influence. Most Finnish politicians lobby for tourism growth, biomass extraction from the managed forests and the growth of cities.

I would not suggest self-sufficiency for any young person who does not live in the Finnish Northeast, if they have climate anxiety. You have to be very tough if you want to make it in the local community. I was not so at first but learned it from the rescue and military people I met.

The river fishing is known in North Karelia, but when the water temperatures get high I fish the large lakes. Sometimes it is better than anything I’ve seen and it is closer by. I don’t use oil or even engines for this. Perch and pike are abundant here.
Avatar
Samo is coming up Northeast next week. We will fish some of my home rivers if the water temperatures are alright.
This guy had a good trip. Another brown trout caught on my fly with light advice on the exact spot to cast. I should have a side gig as a fly fishing guide to be honest. #FlyFishing #HumbleBrag 🤠

100% true for every search and rescue outfit here, too. They are all volunteer-staffed organizations and often have to risk their own lives. In BC, the busiest one of all is North Shore Rescue, who handle all SAR calls from North Vancouver to Squamish

The Rescue Service is the most underfunded public operation in Finland. People don’t pay attention to it before it becomes necessary to have it
The EU has a system for solidarity like that and the people who go in have a lot of experience, often on the same flights with the tourists

The discussions one overhears in a large city on climate. In a bus two guys went full in from tipping points to how only Technology might save us. Now I’m out in a Kallio bar. A lady is talking very loud about joining a growing budget airline. Supposedly you have to be able to swim 50 meters.

According to early estimates of the French election, the leftwing alliance (New Popular Front) is on course to win the most seats in parliament — beating Marine Le Pen's far-right party. Here’s how the results are projected to look 👇 Follow our live blog for updates: trib.al/Z2s6SfL

Here’s a message: the next four years sets the landscape for the rest of the century for America. Democracy, a livable climate, & justice for all is a path we can choose. Because of the hard work and accomplishments of the 1st term, a better future for all is within sight. Let’s go get it, together.
Which is obviously not future-oriented! But it's a kind of alternate reality future. I do think whatever happens with this period and whether it's Biden or someone else, a vision of what's over the horizon is pretty important and has been a bit absent in this campaign.

Microblogging in English is important for me because I was in an international high-school as a kid in Finland and studied in four countries in my youth. I worked abroad too but haven’t been flying since 2018.

The US (4% of the world's population) has caused about 20% of all historical greenhouse gas pollution to date. Because global temperature rise scales linearly with historical greenhouse gas pollution, the US bears outsized responsibility for causing climate change - and therefore for fixing it.

I don’t know if I have specifically achieved anything else than finding international climate professionals for deep discussions about mitigation policies. We don’t have that IRL where I live so I’m very happy. Sorry about the random fishing content.
The very worst thing about social media, including this site and the Bad Site and every other site, is the illusion that by posting on it you’re accomplishing anything.

Democrats need to stop talking about saving "democracy." They need to start talking about saving "freedom." That's what at stake here — Project 2025 *is* an anti-freedom agenda — and "freedom" is the political concept that most resonates with the majority of Americans.

Bottom line from the latest Beryl discussion from Bob Henson and I: It is likely that Beryl will make landfall in Texas on Monday as a rapidly intensifying hurricane, most likely as a Cat 1 or Cat 2, but landfall as a major Cat 3 is looking less likely. yaleclimateconnections.org/2024/07/trop...

I can take the train and bus system to Helsinki from 400+ km away for these summer events from a single app on the phone and it’s a full-electric trip utilizing some of the lowest-carbon grid power in the world.
Walking and cycling prioritized in cities, clean transit and renewables projects in the region. Large-scale river and wetland restoration. All exist already in North Karelia.
