Has anyone else noticed that after Apple got rid of the headphone jack, most people over the age of 40 will simply listen to their phone with no headphones out in public places? Like, they have no interest in having bluetooth headphones, and will just play aloud whatever thing they’re watching

"Confirming the intuitive: when people are lied to about elections supposedly having been stolen, they become more willing to countenance political violence. [James A. Piazza, American Politics Research 2024] Those who falsely portray elections as stolen bear a heavy moral responsibility."
My roundup of short items for Cato on the radicalizing effect of rigged-election lies, a stunt by the Illinois legislature, a non-link between mail voting & fraud, two online RCV panels I spoke on, and how a climate of intimidation deterred a potential Trump prosecutor.  www.cato.org/blog/electio...

If we're taking about court-packing again, here's my favorite detail from the 1937 controversy: The SCOTUS justices, learning of FDR's scheme at the same time as everybody else, were handed copies *during oral arguments*. Imagine being the lawyer arguing in front of those preoccupied justices!

100 years ago today, on #July4th, 1924, Saul Bellow stepped foot in the U.S.A. for the first time, having been smuggled to Chicago from Canada—by bootleggers, in his telling. The 9-year-old Bellow thought the fireworks and parade were for him. He would finally become a naturalized citizen in 1941.

"We shed as we pick up, like travellers who must carry everything in their arms, and what we let fall will be picked up by those behind. The procession is very long and life is very short. We die on the march." Happy birthday and long life to the master!

it's 2024 and my cat's robot litter box can send me push notifications to my apple watch, which is so ridiculous it sounds like a joke they'd make in a 90s cartoon to explain how stupid the future is

In rereading the Three-Body Problem trilogy, I'm struck again by how thin the characterization is. Also, I had forgotten how VERY many of the characters, both major and minor, are (for want of a better word) incels.

I used to contemplate the years missing from AF's life by noting that she was born a mere six weeks before my mother. My mother's been gone only three years, and AF might still be alive.

Good thread about bad framing
Media frame is: Will Trump seek “retaliation," or won’t he? But that lets him set the terms of the debate. He is expressly vowing prosecutions *solely because* he's been held accountable to the law, meaning he'll prosecute with no evidence of wrongdoing. 3/ newrepublic.com/article/1824...

The first Polish language encyclopaedia (published 1746) included definitions such as: "Horse: Everyone knows what a horse is." The phrase is still used in Poland to humorously say that there’s no point in discussing obvious things.

It seems the greatest act of bravery, the thing that saved the most lives, was his sharing of his own experiences after being touched by the horrors of war. I think we can honor that best by remembering the whole story of his life. You can read more of his story here:
Audie Murphy: American War Hero, Actor, Advocatewww.military.com During WWII, Murphy was credited with killing 240 members of enemy forces and capturing or wounding many others.

it's similar in books where everyone i know who's a full-time author is like "please pre-order because basically only pre-orders count for books anymore"
whenever I think about how a movie's financial success has been reduced to essentially it's first weekend in theaters, I am reminded there used to be a thriving economy based on months-long schedules, rentals, VHS and DVD sales, regional theaters, syndication on TBS, and international release dates
