Unions work. There is nothing else that can do what they do.

This new labor movement actually gives me real hope for the future, people taking direct action is always so inspiring.

We get a nationwide restaurant strike we could bring this country to its knees
Avatar
We could grind this motherfucker to a halt
Avatar
Unfortunately those workers who desperately need a union are the ones least able to afford the strike. Would need an absolutely massive strike fund

And a lot companies definitely know that and use it to their advantage too. The bill in California that's about to be signed into law saying strikers get unemployment has huge implications. Curious to see if any other states adopt it.

I know from conversations that the striking WGA and SAG/AFTRA workers are already getting unemployment insurance in New York and New Jersey.

Adma. You can't just use facts to contradict someone's preferred narrative. That's not fair. That's downright unamerican.

Thank you for this, I missed it when it happened.

Wow, you’re full of shit. If you cared about this you wouldn’t have posted an out of date half truth. If you cared, you would be celebrating Biden for “playing the long game” and getting the sick pay benefits.
Avatar
Wow. I don't care, you dipshit. That you didn't get my point.
Avatar
My bad. It must have been lost in translation. What’s your point?
Avatar
To read a book like “The History of America in Ten Strikes” and see how hostile most administrations have been to unions and then to see Biden today is heartening and underscores the importance of direct action and its positive impact on this country but how you said it was way more concise.
Avatar
Worth noting that the (democratic controlled) CA state government just made strikers eligible for unemployment. That's a HUGE amount of support.
Avatar
That is amazing. Didn’t know that.

Looks like the bill (California SB799) was passed, but it has yet to be signed.
Avatar
The fact that it was even coming down the pipeline completely deflated the studios’ strategy to literally starve them out
Avatar
The WGA deserves all the credit- I'm sure the govt didn't come.up with this all by themselves. Either way...baller move
Avatar
Not even “work harder and put the company’s interests ahead of your own”?? Adam that’s crazy talk.

The state could in theory
Avatar
The state should in theory.. but it doesn't.
Avatar
Because the state has been captured by capital. This is not the inevitable, immutable or always-been state of things. The state, recaptured by the people, could be more powerful and good than any union
Avatar
Interesting, so you’re saying there needs to force that can counter to the power of capital. I wonder what that could be.
Avatar
lets all bind together to figure it out

Avatar
Hey im not arguing against the importance of organized labor
Avatar
Of course. I’m just ribbing a bit nothing personal

a little late on a tuesday for this kind of discourse, no. more of a sleepytime tea vibe imo

Um, the state has always been in service to capital, at least it has here in the US. Capital is literally why the USA was formed.
Avatar
Some states today do things that unions do (or did) in the US
Avatar
When workers fight, they win. Everyone deserves a union—except cops.
Avatar
What is it about police unions that cause them to go consistently wrong? Why aren't they like other unions?

it’s a shame Bluesky doesn’t have animated gifs or I’d put one of my favorite Trotskys here

I get mailers at least once, sometimes twice a month from the "Freedom Foundation" who very badly want me to stop paying dues to SEIU. Which is very funny to me because I am represented by a union, but it's not SEIU (and hell no I'm not going to stop paying my dues, my union rules).
Avatar
I thought this said UNICORNS, and I was trying to figure out why they were useful 😅
Avatar
As a union member, I fully agree. Still, these recent successes are due largely to the unusually strong economy at the moment.

it's a form of mutual aid, and they don't like it when we use mutual aid. Mutual aid makes us stronger and able to have the strength to stand up tot hem and knock em off their ivory towers. I think it would be good if all major industries unionized.

Organized labor is the most capitalist way of ensuring workers get their worth. Companies have to contend with market fluctuations for raw materials and other resources. Labor is no different another than just another resource subject to market volatility.
