There is a large number of conservatives who did not understand the themes of their favorite shows, movies and comic books prior those franchises casting more black people in prominent roles. Star Trek and X-Men are among the strangest targets for this complaint bsky.app/profile/pete...
Definitely the funniest and most confusing thing I've seen today:

I was reduced to incoherence this week by someone with the user name ‘punk girl’ complaining that Green Day were going political. She didn’t want politics in music.
Avatar
I have a hard time thinking of any music with lyrics that isnt political in some way or another. She must lead a very dull musical life.

Punk in particular has been very heavily socio-political since the very beginning. It was born from working class, anti-authoritarian rage about police brutality, wealth gaps, labor exploitation, capitalism, political hypocrisy, etc.
Avatar
It's funny how, periodically, conservatives who enjoy the punk aesthetic twist themselves into knots trying to claim that the anti-authoritarian core of punk rock means it's conservative at heart
Avatar
And like, somebody who hears "fuck the system" and thinks that means "we need less business regulation" is at best making an egregious category error

They love to point out that Johnny Rotten is a right winger now, but a) the Sex Pistols was a boy band that Malcolm McLaren put together to sell clothes, and b) 99% of the other old punks are still pro-labor, anti-authoritarian leftists.
Avatar
Well, they can keep the Nazi punks (and also fuck off)

Conservatives literally have to turn off the analitical aspects of their minds to enjoy anything. My mom hates that my dad likes queen. (Huge homophobe) His "excuse" to her is "it aint THAT bad!", but thats as far as he defends. Even things they enjoy cant be good for them. Miserable ideology...
Avatar
I'm not an expert on punk, but I know enough to refer them to Nazi Punks, Fuck Off when they get on that nonsense.
Avatar
It's funny how "conservatives" constantly twist themselves in knots trying to claim that they themselves aren't authoritarian as hell.
Avatar
They imagine heroic freedom fighter roles for themselves The rest will have to obey them ofc I think this ties into how they often don't get the actual messages in media, those don't support their egos enough
Lol I’m old but I still go to punk shows (just got tix to see MDC next month), and let me just tell you that while they aren’t typically supporters of the Democratic Party or its mainstream candidates, they are by and large EXTREMELY anti-GOP.
Avatar
Hehe, conservatives LOVE authority, as long as they are the ones wielding it

Who could forget about The Clash classic "I'm So Excited By the U.S.A."?
Avatar
Hit songs include: I Want to be Sedated (Due to my insomnia) Police Van (is stuck in traffic) California Uber Allies (Use code punk for 15% off 3 rides) American Idiot (Mostly about my annoying neighbor) Clearly non-political.
Avatar
i'm still amazed i'm the same age range as some of the young politicians that also grew up as teens in early 90s and they somehow didn't realize RaTM was political and very far left leaning political. none of the members ever hide that part of their personal views. ever.

Did you ever read, "Our Band Could Be Your Life" by Michael Azerrad or "Please Kill Me" , about American punk rock, by Legs McNeil? Excellent reads.

Let’s see, how did punk start? Oh yeah, calling the royal matriarch’s reign a fascist regime. I can’t tell, is there a political message in there somewhere?🤷‍♂️

God Save the Queen, we mean it man…Sex Pistols nailed it!

All art is political. It's unavoidable; the artist is going to have beliefs, and lives in a particular culture at a particular time, and those are going to be expressed, even if unconsciously, in their creation.

Possibly she was an American Idiot

Music was my introduction to politics! CSN+Y, Steppenwolf, etc. I probably owe a lot of my ideas to those guys, especially Steppenwolf. John Kay has a way of laying things out that makes a lot of sense to me.

another argument for all music videos having captions >.>

Oh no, Green Day going political? Who's next? Rage Against the Machine??
Avatar
God forbid that punk icons like the Clash go political!
Avatar
Or the Sex Pistols. Can't have that.
Avatar
Was ... was she using the word "punk" ironically ... ????
Avatar
American Idiot is an almost-20yo-album and yet...
Avatar
Yep cause Green Day was never political. (American Idiot standing behind me.) Nope. Never. /s

I am sorry to tell that Person that the Clash's "Guns of Brixton" were not about a white-only supremacist shooting range in London's countryside and that the Sex Pistol's song is called "Anarchy in the UK", Not "Ivy League in the UK".
Avatar
So do people not know what lyrics mean? Or just never learn the words.

The Machine is mom asking you to take out the trash

My 13yo and I were discussing the phenomenon of people not listening to the lyrics. I mentioned Paul Ryan lifting weights to Rage as an example. Sharing this with him.

I'm pretty sure it was the printer.

I don't think I ever saw that. It's hilarious.

The song “feed the machine” by poor man’s poison exists for a reason. A lot of the time “the machine” in music refers to a corrupt greedy political government or corporation(s).
Avatar
And music. Don’t forget that they don’t understand music as well.
