Yeah, we super don't.
"Presumption of innocence" is a legal standard for criminal courts and doesn't eveb mean a person is innocent, it just means the law is constrained from punishing even the guilty without proof.
I'm not the law and my opinion is not a punishment
It’s pretty clear to me that carrying around and constantly using a pocket-sized network-connected supercomputer is not good for me. But I don’t want to talk about it with anyone I know because they’ll make me do something about it
A tourist driving in Vermont stops at a fork in the road. A sign pointing left says "White River Junction: 78 miles." Another sign points right, "White River Junction: 70 miles."
The tourist asks a nearby farmer, "does it matter which road I take?"
The farmer says "Not to me it doesn't."
I assume the typical Twitter apologist sees this disparity as proof that more civilized platforms are mere echo-chambers, and Twitter is the sole bastion of free speech (abuse)
There was an even bigger difference in the comments received. All on Threads and all but one here were positive, constructive, or neutral (one person was just being a jerk, not a troll). Only 18% on X were positive or neutral. The rest were negative, many highly so.
The Library Board where I live (Kalispell) is a useful illustration of the principle that your vote has downstream effects. We don't vote for library trustees, but we vote for the County Commissioners who appoint them. If we want things to get better, we have to vote for better commissioners.
Hi everyone! One *extremely meaningful* thing you can do to fight back is to join library boards. Usually this is an appointed position, not elected. The time commitment for most public library board members is 1-2 hours monthly.
I'm a former library director. Ask me anything.
i just don't like things being private when they should be municipal! i'm sorry! i want the employees to be in a union and i want robust protections against discrimination in a purpose-built space i partially own via taxation! i want it to be venture capital proof!
Two things can be true, we are on a precipice as a nation where we shouldn’t be and you shouldn’t use the app for people with severe anxiety to follow the debate
The ISP I worked for in 2001 had a style guide declaring “internet” is a proper noun that is capitalized, and “email” has a hyphen after the “e.” I rejected those rules then and still reject them today
Still mad about Forrest Gump, a movie the whole world assured me I would like. But I have to give credit to my wife, not someone I considered a Back to the Future fan, pointing out that the entire movie is basically the Marvin Berry scene without the time travel element
The way prominent historical events are dropped in to Forrest Gump, just a bunch of stuff that happened, makes it the We Didn’t Start The Fire of cinematic period pieces
It's not a goddamn documentary, you're not filming as much footage you can and then picking and choosing what to keep, it's a terrible strain on the animator's wrists
