Now that folks had a chance to see MaXXXine and found it lacking, as an alternative I recommend the French slasher film Knife + Heart. It is set in the world of gay porn in the 1980s, and has the courage to actually become transgressive, rather than the facsimile of it.

Ok, I was mostly on board with the new season of The Bear, then I got to the episode that began with voice over from Martin Scorsese and Ricky Jay talking over famous shots from classic cinema. At least it’s a perfect, go-to example of what it means when we call something pretentious.

We are overdue for a good mainstream siege film. The French thriller Athena was terrific, but there hasn’t been a good one from Hollywood since the Assault on Precinct 13 remake (Green Room doesn’t count).

Good morning! There’s a heatwave over much of the US, so going to the movies probably sounds like a good idea. Nonetheless, you should probably skip MaXXXine, a film that indulges pastiche for its own sake and not much else.
MaXXXine - Spectrum Culturespectrumculture.com Ti West’s horror sequel is ‘80s pastiche for its own sake, a series of barely related scenes strung connected by an uninspired whodunit plot.

I went to a baseball game today. The Nats won. It did me some good to be outside and around all kinds of Americans, to see their smiling faces despite the heat. It did me some good to be offline, where no one is posting themselves into a panic. Some of you need to try the same.

I wrote a brief blurb about why I consider Civil War the year's best film (so far). This was filed days before Monday's Supreme Court decision. I still think I am right, but man, those last few lines make me wince.

If you're still feeling desperate this morning, I recommend you peruse BBC Music's YouTube channel. They uploaded the best performances from Glastonbury last weekend, and if you cannot find one song here that means something to you, then the joyous crowds singing along will win you over.

A slow-burn, constant daylong anxiety attack coupled with a feeling of hopeless exhaustion. I am taking a break by seeing a horror film.
what's your physiological reaction to a day like this one? for me, it's the sense that my throat's closing up.

There is one guy in particular who was a friend, and who I stopped engaging socially when I found out he voted for Stein in Michigan. Fuck you, Ben.
Also, and this is just personal, I’m never forgiving anyone who equivocated about our choices in 2016. Not a single one. I will hate you in life and haunt you in death.

Of all the people out there casting blame for election results, this motherfucker should really, really keep his mouth shut. Without him, no Roberts. (Or Alito)

I wonder if anyone who is *CERTAIN* how the rest of the 2024 election will go also remembers that Trump could be sentenced to real jail time in less than two weeks, and there are about another *FOUR MONTHS* after that.

Want a reprieve from the hopeless dystopian hellscape? Why not watch a film where violent aliens descend from the sky into the middle of Manhattan? Bonus: a cute kitty is the third most important character! My review of A Quiet Place: Day One.
A Quiet Place: Day One - Spectrum Culturespectrumculture.com The prequel to the popular horror franchise is not as suspenseful as the first entries, and yet its character moments—including a fine feline performance—smooth over its mild genre shortcomings.

I just finished a 200 minute Turkish film, and it was a god damn masterpiece. What a great way to spend an evening. How has your night been?
So what's your counter-programming for the debate tonight? I plan to finally tackle Ceylan's About Dry Grasses.

What a tagline, indeed, but also surprising that a tagline from a Mark Wahlberg flick directed by *Mel Gibson* opts for an inclusive pronoun.
what a tagline

My full review of A Quiet Place: Day One will run tomorrow, but for now, let's say it has two things going for it. 1. A truly excellent final shot. 2. A kitty!

this is sort of important to note, i think, the kind of person who thinks AOC is too centrist is a genuine fucking weirdo, and while you might encounter dozens or hundreds or even thousands of them online, it’s a country of 330M people, they basically don’t exist
like, i am not going to even bash “leftists” here, any person who thinks AOC sold them out has politics and ideologies that are too fucking weird and nonsensical to even fairly categorize
