Every time Republicans undermine a policy or system and then yell about how those policies and systems don’t work and should be eliminated. So cynical and gross.

We can't even vote over it, the elected officials were replaced by partisan technocrats from Austin. We do not I've in a democracy. What is our recourse, protest? We have. What's next?
Avatar
Has there been any attempt to sue the state for its overbroad action on installing Miles to the largest district in the state over only a few failing schools?
Avatar
Avatar
Fantastic thank you! At the least they will see money
Avatar
They aren’t even from ATX! Pretty sure it’s not the libertarian technocrats so much as the generic republicans from around the state (many of them also opposed to vouchers, which complicates the politics).
Avatar
I thought this was straight up Greg Abbott?
Avatar
It is. Raiding the HISD coffers while also destroying the district to make his pet voucher program look appealing.

It sucks so damn bad.

It’s a big story now! The superintendent got caught funneling school funds to his failing charter schools in Colorado.
Avatar
I saw. I hope this is the beginning of the end of him.

JFC. Oh. Mike Miles, huh. OH. Dude ran for (Dem) Senate here. Didn’t get through the primary. Did raise a lot of money. Nobody ever saw where that went. Then he fucked with District 2 in Colorado Springs as superintendent. Lost the district a LOT of experienced teachers in a teacher shortage.
Avatar
Definitely one of those guys whose resume looks good on paper, and none of his references are likely to say anything directly bad about him, because it’s often hard to prove just how much damage dudes like him can do in leadership positions. Looks like he got sloppy, arrogant, or both.

Jesus. The TEA really has a lot of explaining to do.

Given it was the Springs, and during that fad for tying teacher pay and promotion to student achievement using NCLB scores? And that school district is the south Springs, so a lot of those kids are there because their parents are at Fort Carson, Petersen, Schriver, or Norad. And have been elsewhere.
Avatar
So kids who have their whole world reset every 2-3 years, who attend base-adjacent schools with varying degrees of quality (usually on the poorer end of adequate), and in the years when those kids had parents on frequent deployment. Almost nothing improves achievement in those conditions.
Avatar
So those teachers went to the other schools districts in the area, or moved to Denver metro (since at that time, Denver Metro housing was not yet out of control.)
Avatar
As perverse incentives go that was definitely one of the most perverse
Avatar
Yeah. It might have worked with a carve-out for schools with at least 30% military kids, and to treat that carve-out as its own super-district in terms of data. But even that is quite a lot of wishful thinking. But conservatives LOVE the idea of punishing teachers for doing the work.

Just months after Sara Johnson was named Superintendent of the Year in Oregon, she was pushed out of her job when a gang calling themselves "Mama Bears" won school board elections in Prineville. They came to power thanks to organizing from Bundy's People's Rights militia www.opb.org/article/2023...

And only education for some.

honestly, they're so far gone they're monarchists. they want a landed aristocracy and an absolute monarch. +they'll destroy anything +everything to get it, including installing a dictator. because the difference between a dictator + an absolute monarch is so little as makes no difference *to them*.

Wife works in HISD — it is so much worse than the press is reporting They seem incapable of not believed Mike Miles and his cronies while everyone experiencing this in real time are telling them this is bad Nope got to write up Miles version!

I changed careers 20 years ago and became a teacher. I didn't harbor (too) many illusions about how it would be compared to the world I was coming from (lawyer). So I feel like I'm in a good position to say that what we've witnessed in the past 7 - 10 years is distressing to say the least. (1/ )
Avatar
I probably would not make that same career jump now, all other things being equal. Sure, I got that some people had stupid opinions about teaching, e.g. Those who can, do...etc., and that the compensation was insulting and all the rest. But there was nothing like the active campaign (2/ )
Avatar
against educators and public schools that we see now. Those stupid opinions have become weaponized and they are being wielded by the Right (let's be real, that's who is doing this) as part of their culture war and increasingly desperate bid to stay in power despite being in the minority. (3/3)
Avatar
I have felt so defeated for a long time but I should join a school board or library board or something.
Avatar
And this is why i got the hell out of austin/tx all together
Avatar
It is infuriating.

HISD laid off all their janitors this week (effective in June), “inviting” them to reapply for contract positions with no sick days and no benefits. Fucking criminal.
Avatar
ALLLLL OF THEM. That’s over 1000 people. Not to actually cut them, because they need those people, but just to strip them of benefits.

They claim it's not a lay-off, it's "right-sizing."

YEAH IT’S TERRIBLE.

Just part of the Republican plan.

I am so grateful my youngest graduates this year!

I don’t understand why she cooperated and resigned, rather than force them to lay her off - doesn’t that affect what benefits she is eligible for?

If I'm not mistaken, Abbott and company also took over the Harris County election apparatus, almost assuring that Houston/Harris will all of a sudden swing hard red. It'll be about as fair as Russian election.
