Dominik Diamond of GamesMaster fame has written that when he was getting famous so young, it was easy to get addicted to how you were important and thus always right even when wrong, and then push away people who knew you before then who will point out you're changing.

(and THAT explained it for me why you keep seeing stories of people who became famous and broke up with their pre-fame partners)

It's possible. There's many people who've been in the same positions of power and not done it, or done much lesser transgressions, but there doesn't seem to be any common factor (not politics, religion, background, aesthetics etc) in who is and who isn't.

One big reason I'd disagree with this is that American super-comics have made the shared universe a big selling point - and DC's found several times that if you do a reboot of one comic and not another (and the ones that aren't, aren't because they sell a lot), down it goes.

Recurring reboots also seem to have severely damaged Legion of Superheroes as a comic that sells, after decades as a big cheese in the DCU; and the Valiant reboot as Acclaim Comics did poorly but that seemed to be a general mess
