I'm in Western NY and I've always heard and used slice.
Hi, that's nice. Born and raised here, too, and I've usually called them slices. Of all the things the governor is doing and saying, using a local phrase about pizza is the least offensive.
My husband ate pizza with a fork in Brooklyn and so we can never go back.
Actually the NYS legislature passed an amnesty in 2019, so you may be ok.

To be fair, “piece of shit” pizza accurately describes all that I’ve had in western NY. Hell, even VT figured it out by 2005 or so.
