We talking about PRAXIS. Not a theory. Not the theory that I go out there and die for, get into every Internet argument like it’s my last. We talking about PRAXIS. How silly is that?

Here are crime rates for different groups, by immigration status. Note that the rates for undocumented immigrants are not just lower across the board; they're less than HALF the rates for citizens in every category except traffic violations.

Severe sleep apnea is a 1/10 would not recommend medical condition but it does offer some limited upside by lowering expectations, eg “any night I don’t wake up suddenly and punch my bedside lamp is a relatively good night’s sleep.”

O shit this is about to be the Real One isn’t it?
Them going after furries is a 1000x tougher fight for them than any judicial or civil rights organization they’ve messed with before

Fun fact: the infant sibling of one of my kid’s preschool classmates died at that same preschool (which was understandably shut down by the state). I would not summon up the same restraint.

Another example: I’m on a Facebook group (I know) full of earnest young revolutionary types and everyone was saying how Based a meme about stealing a speed camera from a school zone was. Sorry to be insufferably Old here but speeding in a school zone is not a fucking revolutionary act.

And “ACAB includes crossing guards” is the precise attitude I would point to if you’re wondering why your movement is struggling for traction.

My kid goes to a school located on a street that is two-way except at pick-up/drop-off times. People routinely ignore this and cause traffic snarls which in turn causes people to drive angrily and impulsively, which just generally makes the going to and from school process rather scary. When…
underappreciated how many segments of the left participated in the neoliberal turn in this kind of knee-jerk "government bad" way. foreign policy, city planning, water policy, environmental policy, etc

…the subject of maybe having a police presence to enforce the traffic laws, that was nixed out of a sense that police would be uncomfortable for students and parents — the school is a hair over 75% POC, but it’s not clear whose concern this is. I’m mostly worried that someone’s gonna get run over…

…and I’m worried that we’re not going to preempt this threat by refusing to use the government agency whose job is this kind of enforcement out of some sense that we’re Bad Liberals if we do. It’s frustrating! To be sure, most of the blame lies with cops who have done a lousy job of earning trust…

My opinion (which I will probably get roasted for and deserve it) is that people have not been nearly critical enough of the role that pro wrestling has played in making entire generations act like this

Good for Boston transit riders, but it’s a sad day for fans of truly godawful UI design who relished watching people reload a CharlieCard on a bus, one. coin. at. a. time, followed by the mystical correct sequence of taps of the card to actually result in their paying the fare. Great stuff. 10/10

After watching The Eclipse, we took a meandering trip back to Illinois through some tiny Indiana towns and we saw a ton of signs opposing local solar and wind energy projects. The number of people employed in coal mining in Indiana would fit into my high school football stadium with room left over.

Indiana — flat as a pancake, frequently windy as hell, centrally located, plenty of pre-existing infrastructure — would be an amazing place for clean energy production if not for (gestures broadly at everything)

(Debate happens) NYT: Biden was terrible in the debate! He must drop out! Me: OK, maybe NYT: Here’s seven editorials about him dropping out! Me: 🤨 NYT: Here’s a weeklong blast of Team Coverage about how old he is! Me: Already have a calendar NYT: Ooh, maybe he has Parkinson’s!
I’m honestly agnostic on the question of whether Biden should bow out as the candidate but I learned many years ago that “good ideas don’t need lots of lies told about them to gain public acceptance,” so I’m adjusting my opinion of the Times accordingly

Me: Any people in particular? NYT: Provocative Public Intellectuals! Me: Yeah, what kind? NYT (sotto voce): The right-wing conspiracy-theory kind. Me: Sorry what? NYT: Nothing! Read tomorrow’s issue for Important Updates!

So comforting to know that you can never ever be kicked out of Provocative Public Intellectual Club just for being repeatedly full of shit

Honestly, it feels like we might have been better off if they had pulled something ad hoc out of their ass to simply say that Donald Trump alone can never be prosecuted in Federal Court for anything ever and not tried to establish any precedent or rule

If you stop for slushies and board games, I humbly advise the one great urban transportation planning board game: (not trying to advertise, just a fan.)
On the Underground: London / Berlinboardgamegeek.com Develop the subway and attract passenger traffic in London and Berlin.

I live in a great house in a densely-populated transit-oriented inner suburb of a very large city with good schools and all I can say is … people are willing to pay a *lot* to avoid winters
