A fifth grader has paid off the entire meal debt, and then some, for his elementary school. In a video shared to his mom’s Facebook, Daken Kramer had challenged “friends, family and local businesses to donate what they can to this cause.” He wound up turning in a check for more than $7,300.
A Missouri fifth grader raised enough money to pay off his entire school’s meal debt | CNNwww.cnn.com Kids can now eat without breaking the piggy bank – at least, at Thomas Ultican Elementary School – thanks to fifth grader Daken Kramer.

The ol' orphan crushing machine is appeased once more!

The machine never quits! No one knows why???

You forgot to add "Heartwarming"

I did this as a kid once. I grabbed all the loose change I could come across and eventually built up a fucking dragons hoard of dirty coins until it got big enough to pay off a month of lunches.

Breaking fifth grader raises more money than the whole Republican party for children’s lunches. #FamilyValues #ProLife

The fact that lunch debt is a thing is a failure of our society. We should be feeding all kids in school.
Avatar
Honestly…..it keeps getting worse
Avatar
Why is it up to a fifth-grader to eliminate the "meal debt" of his cohort
Avatar
Instead of paying for the administrative costs of tracking and servicing school lunch debt, schools could use the money to feed kids for free. But I guess it’s more important for these schools to punish poor kids as a lesson of what life will be like when they grow up and remain in poverty.

A fifth grader paid the taxes that his neighbors dodged

Headline should be School District Deliberately Starves Children Child fights injustice
Avatar
Kudos, little fifth grader - but you shouldn't have had to do this. Shame on the system and all the adults that let it happen.

“Child raises enough money to save self and classmates from the Child Crushing Machine (now with AI)”. Don’t ask why we have the child crushing machine

this isn’t the feel good news article you think it is, you dumb motherfuckers
Avatar
a better article would have been “Why the fuck do elementary school students have to pay for school lunch?” but I guess you guys aren’t ready for that
Avatar
Children paying off lunch debt is an indictment of our society.
Avatar
Missed the part in this story where you contacted elected officials in Missouri to ask them why they created the possibility of grade school meal debt in the first place
Avatar
Just heartbreaking that being pro-feeding-children-because-they’re-hungry is a radical position in this country.
Avatar
Hear me out... I know this is radical and makes me a Marxist, but meal debt shouldn't exist.
Avatar
Avatar
Child hunger should not exist. The food companies are applying the De Beers modus operandi of manufactured and fake rarity... Just funneling our obvious overproduction up to the top by denying everyone else human needs, which is to say: basic and fundamental human rights.
Avatar
This isn't a "feel good" story. It describes a symptom of a collapsed society where individuals are expected to bear the responsibility for our failed social institutions. Not only should this not be an issue in the first place, but a fifth grader shouldn't ever have to worry about it.
Avatar
Amazing how absolutely no one has stepped up and offered to reimburse this kid. Not even a GoFundMe that would end up making this kid whole 200x.
Avatar
Missouri voters are pieces of shit
Avatar
This just as easily could have been the headline.
Avatar
It's a reflection of where we are as a society when a kid shouldn't have to do something to make sure others can eat.

I still remember the story of the little girl raising money for her moms tombstone by selling lemonade a few months back. Like WTF have we become as a society. Just sad and disappointed in most of us 😔
Avatar
Oh good, those kids are allowed to live now because he earned enough existence justification credits for all of them!
Avatar
for now! Until next year when the debt begins to hit again and another kid has to do the heartwarming story!

do we suppose we could figure out a society that doesn't have school lunch debts? or is that too filthy space communist?

Sorry guys I live in a country where there are public schools, what does MEAL DEBT exactly mean?
Avatar
It’s where we find new and horrifying ways to perpetuate classist oppression because heaven forbid the Poors start thinking they’re entitled to human rights.
Avatar
I can understand (not validate) this conservative idea of *deserving* food but how does that apply to children? That’s sick
Avatar
Conservatives see children fundamentally as property of their parents, not as people in their own right. What better way to punish poor people for being poor than by starving and indenturing their children?
Avatar
Hey, now! The good Christians on the Right love all children and care about them deeply and passionately...until they're born and need pesky things like food, clothing, shelter and an education.
Avatar
What's a more neoliberal idea than forcing children to go to school and then forcing them to pay for it?
