I occasionally think about how James Cameron became an expert on subs when he wanted to build a sub, to the point where he was enough of a subject matter expert to talk about it on the news.

And that, ironically enough, proves that this sector in particular did make room for innovators who were not all phds or credentialed engineers. That kind of gate keeping wasn’t what stifled this guy’s innovation - it was the inescapable laws of physics.
