Curious about the miliTARTy history. (As someone who misses a ton of typos, I relate. But also, it's a permanent sign).

(Also, kudos to my Dad who spotted the typo as we were walking along)

Trenton State changed its name and rolled out a bunch of "College of New Jesrey" signs.

never change, south jersey

I've walked by that sign probably hundreds of times and never noticed!

could be worse ;)

Dunno. That one seems triffic to me.
Avatar
And this one was totally correct - maube just slightly ahead of its time back in 2012 ;)

To be fair, it could’ve been made by a recent New Zealand immigrant

Honestly the stretching on Woodrow Wilson House is the bigger crime to me

"we dedicated 90% of our budget to break kerning"

Yes. Also, the sign doesn't actually look all that permanent; it looks like a card that can get slid out and updated.

very naughty soldiers. shameless

I've actually been to that museum. It wasn't that interesting.

We need to talk about the Woodrow Wilson font.

Look, militant tarts were the cornerstone of the Founding Fathers.

There is a long and stories history of intermingling art and war.

Bit worried who ever did the typesetting for that sign may be having a stroke.

OMG! 😱 How many people failed to spot that problem before that sign was erected!??!??! 🤯😱

This sign looks like a phishing attempt

"Arty" is clearly mil-speak for "artillery" When I was in, the term "DivArty" was our jargon for "Division Artillery Headquarters"
Avatar
“You misspelled ‘military’” “Oh. Damn.” “Are you going to fix it?” “Can’t, mate. It’s permanent.”
Avatar
How embarrassing, writing Militarty instead of Millitarty, which is 1/1000 of a Tarty.
Avatar
What is going on with the font there
Avatar
My best guess: Sign has been amended over time and several vinyl orders. At some points, the original font spec was lost or the vendor changed, and they did a best guess match, which most people can't do accurately. Also people don't anticipate the need to keep precise records of old specifications.

Some process problems are also evident in the manual placement of letters and counters (LaoGai) leading to jittered letterspacing and baselines. Not to mention the variation in size, horizontal and vertical scalings. Not sure if any letters have been applied upside-down but this does happen…

I hear they have a great exhibit on Admiral Apple Crumble

Why is WOODROW WILSON so tall compared to the rest? 🤔
