There’s some real heavy shade being thrown here and maybe half of it is lost to time, but it’s real clear they’re calling McClellan a jackass fuck and a wienerhead
"Hero of Munson Hill" is some fine shade if you look into it. (It was perceived to be a fearsome fortress within eyeshot of Washington, but when McClellan occupied it it turned out to be a decoy fort fitted with Quaker guns).
They surrendered, but were given more mercy than they deserved. Sherman had the right idea, but was stopped short of what should have happened. Allowing the slavers a bit of grace and humility allowed them to continue their traitorous ways long after the surrender.
I wrote the coverage of Arlington Nat'l Cemetery for the Unofficial Guide to DC. I'm proud of not mincing words in talking about Lee's role in its creation.
Except that Union victory ended around 850k deaths, emboldened US interventionism, ultimately in WW1, leading to the rise of Hitler, the Holocaust, etc. If the Union had only let Ft Sumter go and the Confederacy fail or reform on its own, what lesser human toll overall would it have been?
Should have defeated the CSA, freed the slaves, divided the plantations and given the land to the former slaves, disarmed ALL the whites and given the guns to the former slaves, let them elect new governments with full participation of former slaves, and >then< let them petition to rejoin the Union.
