Please, please, PLEASE make it possible for people to disable their replies showing in the timelines of people who follow them. Please. It is the primary driver of 95% of the harassment and brigading because of how badly it facilitates context collapse.

For those who are wondering, here's a thing that's got Atlantic/NPR types musing about how it "feels deeply true" over at Musk's playground. With other similar musing from other elites.
I just have a hard time treating seriously an analysis that includes the phrase: "The Democrats made a big bet that trying to raise the status of blacks would be popular, but at best they had mixed results."

8. The assholes on this network are not assholes because of whatever particular marginalized status they may fall into, but blocking the assholes who are screaming at people the loudest absolutely gets you accused of being bigoted against their particular marginalization.

And if you need some context here: California is the 5th largest economy in the world. Its electrical grid seems to be on a very short path to being 100% renewable. If they can do it—adding grid stability also!—others can too. If you're a climate doomer, let this brighten your sky today, just a bit
This news is incredible. 100 days this year CA's used 100% renewables to power the entire grid, & through a heat wave, there's been no significant disruption (cough *Texas*). Energy analysts are seeing a "phase-change" of the grid with the addition of 5 nuclear plants worth of battery storage, wow

The problem with "where have you been" responses to people's rising political concerns is that we should be encouraging people to become politically active rather than scolding them upon their arrival.

“fuck you, deported” “what about my lawyer?” “ha ha, fuck you, deported” not enough staff? declare national security threat, take money out of the military budget, who’s gonna stop him “who’s gonna stop him” is, fundamentally, the key to everything Trump says he will do in the second term
These people really don’t get what happens if Trump takes power again.

#HorrorWritersChat Ideal for my protagonist or ideal for the country? Ideal for my protagonist would probably be the silence that falls in the woods during hot summer nights, when all the insects and frogs stop making sounds and you can feel the presence of a dark and vast being just out of sight
#HorrorWritersChat absolutely his (eventual) boyfriend, Jamys, who would be far more (ahem) radical. As in, a lot more eating people.

1) arresting someone for speech like this should never be an available option 2) which comments? (dude said he had "infinite respect for hamas" which marks him out as a bad person being unjustly oppressed rather than a hero, and it's worth noting that)

A local church here in Salem, Oregon just contacted me and asked me to give a presentation on Project 2025. This is why the Trump campaign and the GOP is trying so hard to distance itself from this document produced by people in the vanguard of their movement.
On Chris Hayes podcast with Jamelle Bouie they talked about a possible reason for optimism: Project 2025 seems to have deeply penetrated TikTok. Anecdotally, my 15 yr old mentioned to me all the counselors she works with at camp have been talking about it and what rights they’re worried about losing

The "wants to project" unity thing is literally a fake, imaginary narrative that the media invented to try to help Trump. It's not visible anywhere in Trump's own deranged social media posts and certainly not anywhere in his fellow Republicans' RNC speeches.

Fantastic thread on masculinity, as always.
Since I'm thinking a lot about gender and masculinity lately (and I swear I need to just fire up the laptop and log into DreamWidth and write an essay): there is - correctly - widespread understanding that toxic masculinity is bad, and a pretty solid understanding of what that is. HOWEVER. 1/?

What a delightful morning on bsky with the accelerationists. I wish I could drink coffee.

Exhibit A: the responses in that very thread. Exhibit B, which is truly astonishing:
I am so tired of revolutionary larpers telling me the democrats have never done anything meaningful for healthcare. I remember my friends crying when the ACA was passed because we could stay on our parents' insurance for five more years. Because we couldn't be denied for pre-existing conditions.

I sincerely never thought he would get to this point and I am delighted to see it even if he cannot enact it himself this changes the conversation about what’s possible within the Democratic Party, which has been badly needed for years fantastic news
Breaking news: President Biden is finalizing plans to endorse major changes to the Supreme Court in the coming weeks, including proposals for legislation to establish term limits for the justices and an enforceable ethics code, according to two people briefed on the plans.
Biden set to announce support for major Supreme Court changeswww.washingtonpost.com The president has discussed the plans with constitutional scholars and members of Congress in recent weeks.

A short chat with @crowfielding.bsky.social later and I suddenly have realized the actual protagonist of the story I'm struggling with is not the protagonist I have been trying to write about. And THAT character belongs in a new setting anyway!

Worth thinking about how long Tolkien goes on in Return of the King about despair being a weapon, and presenting defeat as a forgone conclusion being a deliberate and effective tactic

Anyway I'm messing around with southern folk horror
Louisiana horror is always set in swamps, which is ridiculous. All of our biggest cities are built on swamps. Baton Rouge is like 95% drained swamp. That's why it floods all the time. Things make noise in swamps. You can hear them coming. There's a reason we didn't build in the pines.

I've tried for months now, but I just can't get going on this project. Time to shelve it. I'll come back if I can figure out what I want to say.

Okay one more thing. Jamelle Bouie was not the only new york times employee, not even the only regular poster with an opinion column on this website, and I think people should do some real self-reflection on why he was singled out for the sins of that fucking newspaper.
ive been hesitant to inject myself into all this but i will say that there is no excuse for being transphobic even if you're mad at a trans person about something, good god

Doomerism would be giving up on my policy advocacy because "what's the point?". Instead I see an eminently fixable problem, despite the best efforts of my critics.
Covid aware people are engaging in ongoing acts of radical hope. They are doggedly fighting to protect their own health, the health of vulnerable groups, and the overall functioning of society They do this despite shaming, mask bans, social cost, financial cost, etc. That’s surely not doomerism.

some people on here really don’t get how intersectionality works and instead think of it like some sort of pokémon type strength/weakness chart and i really wish that we could collectively acknowledge that there can be multiple important things to address happening all at the same time
