Comics sure are something.

Wow! It does look like Colon, but he drew off-model just enough for satirical purposes. It also looks like he was trying to hide his own style by drawing just a bit worse.
Avatar
Could be Ernie drew it straight-up Casper, and Marie made it off-model in the inks. It'd have gone faster for him that way, at least...

The only thing i ever liked in CRAZY

I'm curious how you know it was ghost-penciled by Colon. It makes sense because he did draw for Crazy at the time. I can't find any info online.
Avatar
I was told it by @evanier.bsky.social, who presumably got it from one or more of the creators.

The dark truth. This is a Watchmenesque deconstruction of Casper.

WATCHMEN, hah! Those Rorschach-come-latelies…

We've found patient zero for the grim and gritty Bronze Age.

Maybe Fredric Wertham was right.

Eerily similar to the only comic I’ve ever drawn (which was a guest strip for a friend’s old webcomic):

My jaw actually dropped at that third page.

Hi, Daddy Bye, Daddy

That was jaw-droppingly dark. Wow.

It’s nice to know that artist back then were perfectly deranged as well The lore goes haaaaard
Avatar
Right I mean it’s dark as fuck but good lore!
Avatar
Wow! Ugh! Somehow I didn't find that particularly funny.
Avatar
Wow, that's basically Jay Stephens' Dwellings, 40 years earlier. I wonder if he's ever seen it?
Avatar
As a kid, I always assumed the three adult ghosts were his killers, who killed each other in a ransom money argument, after killing him, and are cursed to be trapped with him there forever. When I read this I thought, that's ALL?

I thought the Simpsons' joke about Casper being Richie Rich's ghost was dark. Wow.
Avatar
I love this, Severin really nails the Casper style
Avatar
CASPER publisher Leon Harvey was genuinely upset and baffled by the story. He insisted Casper wasn’t the spirit of a dead kid but a different life form.
Avatar
Leon Harvey was kidding himself. At least to the extent that he thought readers would simply assume a child-sized “friendly ghost” was something other than the sprit of a dead child. It’s probably something many people thought about over the years.
Avatar
I remember Matt Groening on Letterman discussing the problem.
Avatar
This panel (which I scanned long ago from an anniversary hardcover) raises even more questions about Casper's origins.
Avatar
The canon Harvey origin is that Casper is a ghost because his parents are ghosts. Editorial had that on hand because letter writers frequently asked about how Casper had died.
Avatar
"Okay, but how did Casper's parents die?" "Cocaine bar fight."

Well... looking at the size of Caspar's noggin', there's little wonder that was a complicated childbirth.

Zack Snyder's Kaspar. Coming 2026.

This is gonna be 4 1/2 hours and in 7 acts isn't it.

“Richie Rich, your mother was named Martha too??? So was mine!”

ROFL, here's your Zack Snyder's Harvey League tie-in...

This reminds me of when MAD mashed up Casper and Cthulhu to create "Cthasper The Friendly Elder God." Writer: Peter-John Byrnes Artist: Nick “The Hat” Gucker
Avatar
Worst origin story I heard involved Richie Rich’s parents killing him for his life insurance

I was already working at Marvel by then, and remember it well. And look — the original art for it sold at auction for a mere $896.25 in 2011. Oh, had I but known! It's one of Marie's career highlights. comics.ha.com/itm/original...
