Dear America, The story changes real quick. That's the power of democracy—the beauty of citizens casting a vote. The same happened in Poland in October 2023 after a historic voter turnout. You do not have to go all the way to the dump. Love, A friend

Pay attention, America.
JUST IN: Polls closed in France. Exit polls show surprise: —Left coalition (New Popular Front) projected first. (!) —Far-right (RN) has lost its bid to take power. Anti-RN front appears to have worked very well. —No bloc close to majority. Follow this 🧵 for results and more:

Thinking about the people of France today. They're doing what America has to do in November.

I stumbled into a strawberry social at a small church — a homely wooden building with half a dozen pews. On a grassy slope behind the rectory was a scattering of white plastic tables under craft fair tents. www.chefdeborahreid.com/today/today2...

And the publications
i really am going to be logged off for the holiday but i would like to drop off a parting thought: publishing a monarchist anti-voting take on the fourth of july is the strongest possible indication of someone's core, true values

I just removed the NYT's Daily from my podcasts. I'm stepping away from the publication completely. Read the LitHub piece I posted earlier from Rebecca Solnit. Words matter.

I watch cars snake into the city every morning along Bloor Street (a major subway route). Most have only a driver. Like addicts, we pretend there’s no relationship between fossil fuel use and climate change. This 🧵
“Canada is such a northern country, don’t we want a little global warming?” I often hear. In a nutshell, NO. We’re warming 2x faster than the rest of the world, driving extreme heat, flood, and sea level rise we are not prepared for. The wildfire season started in Feb this year. Feb! #canadaday
