I’m going to Alaska soon, and so I’m trying to convince myself as a Texan now that I will need to wear jeans in the summer. It’s a hard sell.

As you think about fall syllabi/speakers, @mirya.bsky.social and I are happy to come talk sheriffs - our book ties into local politics, policing, elections, representation, right wing extremism, and a bunch of policy areas (immigration, guns, domestic violence). press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/bo...
The Power of the Badgepress.uchicago.edu A sobering exploration of the near unchecked power of sheriffs in the United States. Across the United States, more than 3,000 sheriffs occupy a unique position in the US political and legal systems. ...

Hi, I need vacation book recommendations. I read almost exclusively romance and fantasy books lately. …and I do not like Colleen Hoover.

I wasn't sure what of my conversation with Ari Shapiro would make it into this, but I was delighted that my zinger about a "hypothetical colleague" made it (Sad that my line that there are 10 men named John/Jon in the US Senate alone didn't make it)
Powerful women tend to be called by their first name. It's not an accidentwww.npr.org NPR's Ari Shapiro talks to University of Houston's Mirya Holman about why women in political leadership tend to be referred to by their first names more often than their male counterparts.

I am developing a fascination with political merchandising. Like Etsy sellers ready to go for VP announcements with designs.

One of the sheriffs that @emayfarris.bsky.social & I open the Power of the Badge with is Danny Youngblood (Kern County, CA) who told deputies in 2018 that it was cheaper to kill someone in the line of duty than to cripple an inmate. He's still sheriff 🙃

This foster cutie leaves me tomorrow. I’ll be sad but so happy that she will find her new family and grow up to be the best dog (and out of the puppy teething stage)!

If one of my former students is ever considered for VP, it is not my fault. I want them all to be city managers.

I know I’m a nerdy outlier but I still remember the exact (and probably naive) feeling of election night 2008, and I really want that feeling of hope again for young people today.

Renaming my survey research class.

If we have to choose a white dude, please let it be Mark Kelly. He’s my choice as he seems decent and fun, which gives kinda Biden energy when he was VP.

Running a survey experiment and got a 400 word message from a respondent on the topic - and it is a remarkably coherent and thoughtful explanation of their policy positions. Qualitative data from surveys can be super interesting!

I need some new polling numbers for my Survey Research class this fall…

Says so much about the state of politics that everyone is just like of course the Democratic VP has to be a straight, white Christian etc man. All politics is identity politics.

Well, seems like a good time to take the foster puppy on a walk.
