My strongest held travel view is that all y'all are packing too much shit on your trips. Stop with the giant bags! Bring clothes you can wear more than once! Do laundry!

Anyone who has ever met a middle schooler knew this was the future
Seventh and eighth graders in Malvern, Pennsylvania, impersonating their teachers posted disparaging, lewd, racist and homophobic videos on TikTok. The incident is the first known mass attack of its kind by middle schoolers on their teachers in the U.S.

This is an appalling and horrifying story about the attacks researchers like @katestarbird.bsky.social undergo by those determined to silence any who call out their disinformation and other underhanded tactics. Very similar to what climate scientists experience but with even MORE vitriol.
Nature spoke to political scientists from around the world whose work has flung them into both the public and political limelight, sometimes with drastic consequences for their personal and professional lives. 🧪
‘It can feel like there’s no way out’ — political scientists face pushback on their workgo.nature.com In a year in which numerous countries are going to the polls, many election-watching scientists are under pressure. Violent metaphors in contemporary American Evangelical Christianity are perhaps the central figure in my villain (aka academic) origin story.
I've written for years about the Christian right's calls for "spiritual warfare" against demonic enemies of Christian America. They used to claim their struggle is against "powers and principalities" not "flesh and blood," citing Ephesians 6:12. But it was still dangerous. Now we see how.

Yes I ended my talk with a poetry reading. I send this poem to my parents every 4th of July. Here it is in full if you've never read it: poets.org/poem/let-ame...
In my early career award lecture at AERA last weekend, I ended my talk with a reading of an excerpt from Let America Be America Again

Putting this here because it's like tweeting to the VIP section, but I'm gonna be on a search committee in the fall for a TT job in political science with a "data analytics" specialization. I'm especially keen to hear from PhDs who left for policy/industry that might want another go in academia.

I've done it! I've finally reached the pinnacle of professoring!* *Didn't know when my own panel was at a conference, had to be told by an early career scholar when I tried to schedule a meeting during it 💀💀

A reason I like to travel is that it exposes me to the absolute psychotic behavior of the world. Like: - wearing leather pants on an 11 hr flight - ordering a combo of whiskey, tomato juice, & diet coke w breakfast - 4 adults holding hands & walking slowly in an international airport

every time I see someone complain about unions I think about how unions were the consensus alternative to the previous system of burning the factory owner alive inside his house
Not making any threats here, just thinking out loud as a historian — do they people brazenly pushing for impunity for the wealthy elites not know what traditionally comes next?

You see this at the University level constantly; they claim not to have money to fund programs that might actually help students but there’s always $100m for the absolute dumbest shit you’ve ever heard of and when it inevitably fails they’re like welp better close the classics department
six million dollars that could have actually gone to support kids

Just at the most basic level it is really unhealthy to have to thought about Donald Trump as much as everyone in America has over the last nine or so years. Spending a decade of my life thinking about a super boring, super shitty crook and all the bad stuff he's doing or might do. It's embarrassing.
