The very racism that would enable a situation where 5 Ohio cops on bicycles shoot to kill a homeless black man in MLK Park a mile outside the soft zone of the convention area.

This is speculation on my part, but rooted in some regional/state knowledge but the WI GOP’s contempt and hatred for Milwaukee really feels like an underlying principle in these choices. And that contempt for Milwaukee is absolutely undergirded by anti black racism-

IMO Republicans do this too (Joe Six Pack). the whole idea of calling other voters "normie". There are no normal people. Everyone is weird.

I call this the universal pundit syndrome. An inability to say "this is what i think" and an insistence on asserting "i think this would resonate." I think it is part of the general alienation/loss of self that comes from mass media and social media in particular.
I think a big mistake liberals make is constantly making up an imagined "normal voter" in their heads to triangulate their opinions around. NO! What do YOU THINK? What do THE PEOPLE YOU ACTUALLY KNOW BELIEVE?

this is all valid! it's also why in my personal experience, canvassing and getting to know my neighbors has been the best antidote to political despair.
The ideal American day you seamlessly transition from your isolated exurban home to your soundproofed automobile where you see no human faces on your long commute to your in person but still completely isolated job in the Microsoft teams mines, stopping only to use a self checkout otw home

The imagined “normal voter” is always more conservative than them too. Seems like a cognitive dissonance to rationalize the conservative values they’re ashamed to admit they hold.

This! All the time. Senator Schumer even gave a name to his imaginary people.

Isn't this famously literally what Chuck Schumer has long done? I think he has a name for the imaginary Long Island couple in his head.

I really feel this. Some folks spend entirely too much time justifying their knee jerk reactions based on how they imagine some guy in an Ohio diner would respond.

NPR "sample size" mentality is a huge part of this problem! It forfeits ground prematurely!! hearing from some random dipshit in Dayton is not the same as canvassing your community!!!
The people I actually know is a ridiculously small sample size. When I listen to, say NPR, and hear the opinions of ~moderately~ informed quasi-centrist voters, it's eye-opening. Extrapolating and triangulating from there to where a "normal voter" might be, I feel despair.

I'd say knocking a lot of doors canvassing here in VA over the past 20 or so years cured me of this. Huge variation in what's on people's minds, but most people think of politics very very little and also often have very weird ideas of how politics connects to their life.

What if you held beliefs because you, I don't know, believe them?
That gets you into dangerous territory because you're making decisions based on the poll of you, me, and everyone we know.

Every big media organization was so crossed-up by Trump winning in 2016 that they have been behaving and hiring as if Long Island-Coded Suburbo-Racist Sociopathy was on an unstoppable ascent worldwide, and interpreting everything backwards from there. It turns out most people actually hate it!
Honestly, what kind of bananas frame this story like this? Is shit serious or not, fucken freaks?
