I dropped my phone and it's a damn paperweight until further notice. So I am hopping on here on my laptop, on a holiday, to see if the Times opinion section published anything kooky/odious. I have to know!

Seems more like a prequel to the original but it's his script, so.

the conservative theory of law in one headline

I keep coming back to "all this for literally Donald Trump," but it fits. There's not some more competent aspiring autocrat who'd somehow "earn" or "win" this. This is how it has always gone: feckless/evil elites attaching themselves to the sociopath they believe will get them where they want to go.

Remembering how people would share Scalia dissents and be like “I disagree with his politics but he has a way with words!!” and they all read like if a school shooter wrote A Confederacy of Dunces

This is the through-line for me, in all those Alliance Defending Freedom cases where a notional future inconvenience to some bigot overturns settled law and in this Trump ruling. The mere possibility of repercussions against any favored group outweighs all the rights everyone else currently has.
The lesson Roberts and Thomas draw from the unprecedented nature of Trump's indictments is not that he's a unique threat (as per all available evidence). The real threat to "liberty" is the possibility that, someday, the most powerful person on earth could, in theory, be unjustly accused of a crime.

a thing to remember, in all of this horror, is that these are not the actions of a political party that is confident it represents the will of the people, and who is currently out of power and enslaved to a deeply flawed avatar. the struggle is not over and they have not won

Waking my wife out of REM sleep because the scene in Robocop where Kurtwood Smith says "oooh, guns guns GUNS" is airing on Showtime. She loves it when I do this. "Thanks for telling me when the good Kurtwood Smith shit is on," she always says.

A bit that has really stayed with me was when Gabe Delahaye used to describe celebrities saying dumb shit as (say) Evangeline Lilly "breaking their legendary silence" on some issue or other.
oh shit you probably will soon? i'm on the edge of my seat bro just tell me already

Just at the most basic level it is really unhealthy to have to thought about Donald Trump as much as everyone in America has over the last nine or so years. Spending a decade of my life thinking about a super boring, super shitty crook and all the bad stuff he's doing or might do. It's embarrassing.

One pretty clear dynamic on display this week is whose legal interests the Supreme Court cares about (corrupt politicians, hedge fund fraudsters, literal January 6 rioters) and whose it doesn’t (poor people) ballsandstrikes.org/scotus/grant...

A decently funny and extremely foreseeable outcome here is that Biden does not step down, and in three months the Times endorses the guy they just said must leave the race for the good of the nation, for the good of the nation.

I don't want some egghead bureaucrat telling me whether there's poison in the water I drink. Ideally I'd want that decided by a 29yo judge who went to a "biblical law school" and does not believe dinosaurs existed, and then to have that decision reaffirmed six years later by the Supreme Court.
