These do seem to keep getting better, at least for a while. Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, despite some dated references to 80's sci-fi, is better as both a satire and as a monster movie than the two films preceding it.
The 80's and 90's Godzilla movies have long been a blind spot for me, so I'm thrilled a handful popped up on Criterion. The Return of Godzilla is visually cool but kind of dull due to a tone that feels like it's trying too hard to avoid the sillier feel of the Showa era.

Is there ever a bad time to listen to @moviessilently.bsky.social's advice? Probably not. But I can confirm this specific recommendation is particularly worth listening to.
I have not seen Sysmäläinen (1938) in a while, so I am rewatching. It is quite disappointing that the crossdressing swashbuckler rom-com never caught on as a genre. (Free to watch with optional English subs.) elonetplus.fi/embed/video/...

You noticed MY profile and felt like you needed to say, "Hi"? Oh, you poor, sweet, innocent blocked bot: the believable human reaction to encountering my profile for the first time is to ask, "What in hell is wrong with you?!!!" If you'd dm'd me that, I *might* have believed it was genuine.

The more I think about Godzilla x Kong, the more I think the movie would have worked better if all (or at least most) of the main characters were plucky kids, rather than limiting it to one kid, her mom, and a couple Guardians of the Galaxy knockoffs.

I had fun with this, but despite some rad visuals it's the first of the Monsterverse movies that felt disposable. The sense of weight and scale is entirely gone, and between the pacing, script, and CG... everything, it's hard to think of this as a live-action movie.
About a half hour into Godzilla x Kong, and so far it's cheesy fun. Maybe a little too campy for its own good, but with the energy and color palette of a zany 80's adventure cartoon. Glad to see they're adding psychic kids to the franchise. 📽️

Halfway through. Feels like the human characters are in a different movie than Godzilla and Kong. Like a *specific* movie. This was originally going to be a Mothra standalone, wasn't it? The human storyline is the better of the two so far, which isn't something I've said about one of these before.

The Imagined Village's cover of Peggy Seeger's Space Girl's Song!
Other than Hurt by Johnny Cash and any version of The Sound of Silence, what are your favorite cover versions of famous songs?

I don't really despise any movie anymore, or at least not any I can think of. I used to, but over the last couple years something changed. I just can't work up anything worse than fascination in why something doesn't work, and even that makes for a mostly positive experience.

I wouldn't call A Bug's Life some kind of secret masterpiece, but on rewatch it was a lot better than I remembered. Counterintuitively, it helps that some better regarded Pixar movies from the era didn't age into the classics they seemed destined to be, so this no longer pales in comparison.

And we're currently driving up a summer surge in the west. Just a heads up, folks - you can go back to masking if you stopped! It's only reasonable to change your behavior based on new evidence. The current variant involves gastro distress. Who wants to spend a week imitating a hose at each end?
The new COVID variant seems to be evading immunity from vaccines and past infections. COVID cases are up 250% in NYC. Remember the more you get covid your risk for long covid increases significantly. gothamist.com/news/nyc-cov...

I realize this is likely common knowledge here, but the fact the direct sequel to Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla is Terror of Mechagodzilla and not Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla II (which came out two decades later and sounds more like a reboot for the Heisei Era) is not intuitive.

Who is the craven motherfucker in the insurance industry that said, "hey, here's an unserved market -- churches that can't stop raping kids. Let's create a comprehensive policy for them."

I actually got some sleep last night. I honestly wasn't expecting that.

To be fair, this sounds like a fraction of the volume of illegal fireworks we've had in recent years around here. Still a ton of the damn things, but an improvement is an improvement.

Godzilla vs. Biollante is a bit overlong with too many (human) characters. That said, it's a cheesy, fun Kaiju fantasy that re-establishes Godzilla as existing in a world bigger and weirder than him alone. In short, a huge improvement over its immediate predecessor. 📽️

Never forget that the early church appropriated Christmas in July from the pagans to trick them into converting.

By the time you hear about allegations, they've been heavily vetted to the point there's VERY little likelihood what you're hearing is wrong. If there's more than one accuser, "very little" drops to "functionally none." As always, believe the victims.

Looking forward to being kept awake all night because a bunch of drunken morons are setting off explosives. That's not sarcasm. I'm actually kind of looking forward to it. I've got plans: I thought I'd try and get some writing done. Maybe watch a movie, too.

This is all too complicated. I'm just going to show my kid Independence Day and tell her that's the true origin of the holiday.

Chicken for Linda!, a highly stylized French animated movie, is streaming on Criterion, and it's all kinds of fantastic. Kind of like watching a 70's cartoon expanded to feature length with complex emotions and whimsical humor.

The Acolyte has been getting better as it goes. The last two episodes have been incredibly satisfying - here's hoping they can maintain this trend for a couple more weeks.

The hardest part about having a kid is you won't have time to see a third of the movies you want to watch before they leave the Criterion Channel. Astonishingly, this isn't even in the parenting books.
