You jest but some of us remember when Apple thought it was a great plan to force U2’s latest album on everyone with an iTunes account.

One positive development of twitter a few months back is not locking new accounts I make until I give them a phone number to sell to advertisers. It costs money to verify those, so they use dozens of captchas instead. Still quicker than the 'contact support and wait a week' method I used to use.
