“He took away abortion and he wants to be a dictator” should be plastered on every surface and blaring out of every speaker.
Nothing is stopping every single Democratic elected official and apparatchik from taking the airwaves every single day to articulately and decisively repeat a set of cogent talking points about Trump (ie 45). Nothing. Dem PACs could be slamming him with ads now. Stop whining and do that.

Idle Sunday thought: ages of unchecked power are also ages of intensely personalized hatred. In literature, film, etc., I bet we’re in for an era of detailed, vigorous grotesques based on prominent figures—the kind you’d find in absolutist France or during a period of medieval church infighting.

I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:

It's a tough call but Mark Robinson may be the most openly reprehensible downballot candidate for the GOP. Long record of espousing bigotry. You can find ways to help defeat him here:
NEWS --> Mark Robinson, the MAGA extremist GOP nominee for governor in North Carolina, appeared to endorse political violence against unnamed foes in a recent speech. "Some folks need killing!" he shouted. "It's a matter of necessity!" Video and story here: newrepublic.com/article/1834...

A good thing to do today: help fund reproductive freedom
OK Bluesky comrades, who can afford to donate at least $5 a month to @psabortionfund.bsky.social? They are an all-volunteer led abortion fund based in South Carolina. They do such good work. Will you join me as monthly subscribers? donorbox.org/support-the-... - they need a min of $10,000 a month.

People who are mad about talk of leaving the country before/if/when it becomes a dictatorship must think there is *some* legitimate reason for fleeing one’s country due to political terror (unless they think everyone who was in Germany in 1938 should’ve stayed and tried to make it work). So … (1/2)

occurs to me that bribing the president is now /always/ legal, since in every case the only way to distinguish gratuity from bribe is via evidence that could never be admissible

Even in the best case (Trump doesn't win and we retain a president with some sort of conscience), living under these conditions will be profoundly corrosive—of our democracy, of our fundamental constitutional freedoms, of each of us as a human being. We simply cannot allow this to be the law.
The Court has purported to strip us of all legal recourse for crimes committed by the most powerful person in the nation. Each and every one of us is now, effectively, at the mercy of an autocrat, who could order our death if he simply made the pretense of connecting it to his official duties.

Criminal law probably functioned as some kind of deterrent on abuses of presidential power, and that deterrent is now gone. But even if that weren't true, today's ruling would be an appalling display of contempt for the American people and for the basic principles on which this country rests.

Do you know which other Americans have immunity from criminal law at all times, forever? Absolutely no one. This is different than qualified immunity, judicial immunity, prosecutorial immunity, etc. Those only bar civil suits. Freestanding immunity from criminal law is unprecedented in the U.S.
An important point about SCOTUS's decision is it is not based on a statute or a special emergency like wartime. They held, without any textual basis, that the Constitution requires that the President be immune from criminal prosecution for "official" acts at all times, forever.

So, like … can we all finally agree that the NYT just straight-up wants Trump to win? (This is not me taking a position on whether Biden should be the Dem candidate, fwiw. I have an opinion on that, but I think reasonable people can disagree. I just think we all ought to be clear-eyed about this.)
