As an indexer I am careful about choosing my words to ensure the index is unbiased and reflects what's in the text. I'm always looking for other ways to think of terminology, categorization and context. Looking forward to reading this in the summer sun!
“To many, conscious language consists of kind, inclusive, and bias-free words. To me, the one who coined the term, this is…like reducing rainbows to seven colors. Conscious language is a philosophy and a practice that goes beyond terminology.”—The Conscious Style Guide 🌈 Excerpt | Buy #AmEditing

Starting a new index today, this time heading off to the seas of Madagascar. Love my job! I've also just realized I need to set up a macro for Madagascar. All those alternating a's are reminding me of some technical exercises from my classical piano days. #IndexSky

Send thank-you notes, send condolence cards, send congratulations cards to celebrate all manner of successes, send postcards to say I’m thinking of you. It can matter. It definitely brings more good into the world.

Sometimes I get hung up on what to call the act of making an index due in part to my art indoctrination "we do not use the word create" I don't use writing an index often as I heard an indexer admonish someone once "we don't write indexes" Compiling ignores the complexity Indexing? lacks fun
Currently indexing / writing the index for the next edition of Epidemiology: An Introduction -- Happy Wednesday!

I have a proclivity to split my work hours into two: mornings and late nights. It give me the to consider how to structure things. Currently I'm indexing about taxidermy in horror films. Not helpful to read just before bed, a chapter on Levinas's il y a, insomnia and the horror of existence. 👀

Oh, man! Look at this - they’ve put a table of contents on the spine! Hats off, Fosforo Editions, that is seriously cool. 😍

Nor is it back of book indexers!
"Yes, plenty of people, upon hearing the biggest music announcement of the year, started thinking about diacritical marks and then talking about them on social media." OK, one of us doesn't know what a diacritical mark is, and I don't think it's me.

That entry and the spareness of the index raise so many questions including what's going on in Florida?
There are so many small things that can be done to help someone navigate an index. One is to only capitalize proper nouns as it helps when scanning a long list. Here we see how it's more difficult to separate the titles from the everyday.

There's a lovely and horrible museum caption in the National Museum of Ireland about a grad student who spent 10 years trying to decipher the runes on an elk horn, only to discover that it says "This is an elk horn."

For the naysayers: proof that people DO want indexes in books. #IndexSky

#IndexSky If one was to make a quilt (or other visualization) of the books they indexed throughout the year, would you use pages indexed or number of entries? Or other? I'm kinda of thinking about knitting the equivalent of a temperature blanket but by an indexing metric.
I’m excited to share a data art project I’ve been working on this month! It’s a quilt made using the data of all the books I read in 2023 📊

what a day! after sitting on a domain for #othernetworks since about 2017, today we are officially launching a (modest...) website to collect all Other Networks related events, workshops, recipes for building your own networks (BYON!), and even an asynchronous book club! othernetworks.net
other networksothernetworks.net "Other Networks" is a cluster of projects headed up by Dr. Lori Emerson and Dr. libi striegl that document and experiment with networks outside of what's now called "the internet." We are invested in ...

"But unfortunately these are typically the least negotiable of the due dates you’ll receive." Authors ensure you ask at acquisition time who's responsible for hiring/paying for indexing. It's likely you. Start searching prior to, or at MS submission. Don't wait for email "due in two weeks"!
For those fretting about meeting their book publishing deadlines, some reassurance: manuscriptworks.com/blog/deadlines And for extra comfort: I spoke to an acquiring editor at a prestigious UP today who said the “delinquency rate” for his authors turning in manuscripts on time is… 100% 😂
