People don’t want to work anymore

if the caseload for this particular court drops to zero, i'll be the last to complain
Avatar
Exactly. At this point that graph looks like fewer shitty decisions
Avatar
The terrible precipice where before getting to that point they hear one or two cases but manage to determine that it's illegal not to shoot puppies at all times
Avatar
Obviously the modern cases require more time and attention in which case really seems like expanding to 21 justices to maintain the earlier levels of action
Avatar
Tbh i wonder if that angle's really been thought of by those responsible for appointing them. It's not even necessarily packing the court if you're just adjusting for population to allow greater work flow is it?
Avatar
Historically, we had one SCOTUS justice for every federal court circuit. This changed around the same time Congress formalized their failure to increase their own size with population growth. It is like they are unable to comprehend adding seats to bodies anymore.
Avatar
The people who appointed them only want intervention from SCOTUS in cases where the issues are too unpopular to address through legislation. Things like absolute immunity, student loans, and reproductive freedom.

Too many luxury vacations paid for by Supreme Court bribery that they have to take!
Avatar
#SilentQuitting two of the justices said in recent oral arguments… “i don’t care about this case per se” that is literally your only job, to rule on the case before you and nothing else, if you want a different job run for legislator/executive!
Avatar
Yeah, but they said it specially so that they can rule narrowly in Trump favour.
Avatar
and they choose their cases!
Avatar
Those all expense paid vacations aren't going to take themselves, are they?
Avatar
TBF, it takes a long time to climb out of the billionaires' pockets. Those are some deep pockets.

You have to boil the water slowly

Can we graph that against the average age of the justices on the first Monday in October?
Avatar
Expand the court! They need help!
What about the shadow docket? How about total requests for certiorari? I think those would tell a different story
Avatar
Wouldn't it just tell the same story? Handing down unsigned decisions without all the hassle of a full case seems like less work.
Avatar
Not that it’s all that relevant but the US population grew by nearly 140,000,000 in that same time period, too. So you’d think if anything it would rise.
Avatar
Or that somebody in charge would admit that SCOTUS needs help and do something about it. Instead of pretending whatever makes folks like Biden think nothing needs to change.
Avatar
Supreme Court decisions have become a lot more difficult to organise over the years. You have to wait until all the bribe bidding wars have finished before knowing which side's opinion you'll accept.

When the avg age of a Supreme Court Justice is 125, standing is pretty hard to come by
Avatar
I would be happy if this particular court did far less.

I’m just as glad they’re not putting their hands all over the law

The fewer they touch and do their worst, the absolute better for my beautiful USA

Avatar
The supreme court might take less cases but they're drastically more efficient: the supreme court does dramatically more harm today with 60 rulings than it did in 1970 with 200
Avatar
Kinda glad they're not doing damage on a weekly basis.

Hey those yacht trips someone else is paying for won't take themselves

Another "Since Reagan" chart delineating when things started going to hell in America.

I hope Chief Justice of the United States John Robert’s is proud. Most of the worst productivity is during his tenure.
Avatar
What the hell happened around 2006-08??
Avatar
In their defense... the fewer cases this SCOTUS takes up the better for the country overall.
Avatar
The farther up the food chain they are the less interested in working they are.
Avatar
I'd like someone to break this down on a cost-per-decision basis for each justice, counting both their salaries and their bribes.
Avatar
It seems like they might have manufacture litigation to justify their existence. Nah. That would never happen.
