I thought it all came from Venice. Their merchants could buy monopolies and it kind of spread from there.
Isn’t that more mercantilism? I’m not exactly up to date on Middle Ages’ economic systems, I admit.

That’s the fault of the French, but we dealt with them soon enough, in the most British way possible too.
Let our navy do the work. On land, pay everyone else in Europe to wear them down, and dive in at the death, win the decisive battle, sideline our allies, and claim all the glory.
